So you are telling me that if the will of the people was to gather up shipments of weed for everyone to smoke he/she should do it? Don't you think the presidents main priority should be to do what is right for the country? The will of the people may not be what is right for the country. So why do I always hear people gripe about Bush?

The flaw with that quote is that not all people think alike. There are some people who think he is doing a great job, there are others who agree with certain aspects of his term and there are those that think he's and idiot. So when you say he should do the will of the people, exactly which people are we talking? The ones that agree with him or the ones who don't? His main priority should be what is best for the country as a whole. You have to know that he is privy to things that we don't know and will never know that will influence his decisions. The majority of people elected him so we ought to shut up and let him do his job.

Dear Abby,

My husband is a liar and a cheat. He has cheated on me from the beginning, and when I confront him, he denies everything. What's worse, everyone says that he cheats on me. It is so humiliating.

Also, since he lost his job 6 years ago, he hasn't even looked for a new one. All he does all day is smoke cigars, cruise around, and bullshit with his buddies while I have to work to pay the bills.

Since our daughter went away to college he doesn't even pretend to like me and hints that I may be a lesbian.

What should I do?

Signed,
Clueless

Dear Clueless:

Grow up and dump him. Good grief, woman. You don't need him anymore. You're a United States Senator from New York. Act like one.

Abby
-------------------

I answered this question with this phony Dear Abby quote because it perfectly illustrates the lack of character of a president who does not have a set of core values or a moral compass and thereby has to depend on the polls (will of the people) to govern and make decisions.

That was the impeached Bill Clinton. He ran the country by sticking his finger in the wind each day to see which way it was blowing before he could decide anything.

And now Hillary wants the job and she's just the same. Yikes!!!

This country would be so much greater if we elected representatives and a president who understood the difference between right and wrong and had the strong moral character to lead us from that base and make decisons on our behalf that are right for the country, not just their own political advantage.

President Reagan was like that. He knew that an arms treaty with the USSR at that time was not the right thing for America or the world and walked away from the negotiating table - totally shocking the entire world. But history shows that he was right and he had the moral courage to make that decision. If he had gone to the polls to find out what he should do, he probably would have signed that treaty and the world would be a very different place now and the Berlin wall would probably still be standing and we would still be involved in a cold war with communism.

President Bush is bit like that. He has had the courage to make unpopular decisions that history will prove to be right. We can win the war on terrorism if we fight them on our terms over there instead of on our streets like the TV show "24".

But for some reason, the people here don't seem to get that point and polls would want him to back away in defeat like Vietnam. That was a winable war that we lost due to the "will of the people" and weak leadership in Washington.

Backing away from the fight now is exactly what the terrorists want and it would prove to them that we are weak and our leadership is weak and it would be just a matter of time before they would come here because they would have us on the run. What a disgrace!

But Hillary wants to "have a chat" to see how she could lead us. She's Hillaryious! And wrong!

Bottomline has to be that we must elect good, honest, moral leaders who can be counted on to do the right thing instead of the politically expedient thing whether it's in a crisis situation or making everyday decisions.

But that's all pie in the sky, isn't it. Most politicians are pretty much a crumby lot, especially the new bunch that temporarily has control of the House and the Senate. They'll blow it and lose out big in the next election, especially with Nancy Pelosi leading them. She also has shown a lack of moral character by promising a new era of bipartisanship and ethics in the House and then appointing all her cronies to chairperson positions including Rep. Jackson from Louisianna who was caught with $90,000 in his freezer right after Katrina.

What have we gotten ourselves into!! And she's 2nd in line to the Presidency!

Wake up America! Vote right next time! No politician is going to be perfect but there are definitely some who are better than others and it all comes down to a choice of the lesser of two evils. Please choose the lesser one in '08.

There's a great line from the musical 1776 that is right on point:

"...A representative owes the People, not only his industry, but his judgment -- and he betrays them if he sacrifices it to their opinion."

Nevertheless, in a free society such as ours, it is healthy to question the judgment of our representatives pretty much constantly.
