Well, as a young man growing up in Rome, he learned all he could about politics, primarily the goings-on of the Senate. He also practiced his martial training very rigorously, becoming an excellent soldier, and eventually, leader of men. That was the key for Julius Caesar. He was a born leader, and could enlist loyalty in his men better than any other general of his time, even Pompey. Once he made a name for himself conquering Gaul and administering that province, which made him quite wealthy, he returned to Rome, initiated a civil war, won it, took a few more years to kill all his opponents, then, again, returned to Rome, to find Senatorial enemies everywhere, though he either ignored them or thought them of no threat. He was the most powerful man of his time because the people loved him, that armies adored him, and the Senate feared him. I happen to think him a Great Man and wonder how he would have proceeded had he not been murdered.

He led the Romans against the Gauls and won. He also became emperor of Rome for a time, I think. He was mostly a military hero. That's all I really know.

He was a powerful man because he was a leader who belonged to the Roman Empire.

He won his campaign in Gaul.
Crossed the Rubican and sent Pompey running and put the Senate in it's place.
