I've had lower back pain for about a year and a half now. It started after a martial arts tournament and ever since then I've experienced pain in my lower back right above my buttocks and about two inches from my spine on either side. I also found two lumps/knots in the area. My lower back and thighs/hamstrings feel trembly and weak from time to time as well, almost to the point where they may just buckle on me.

I have been to numerous doctors and none of them have been able to give me a clear answer as to what these lumps are. I've had numerous MRIs and X-rays as well, all of which showed that everything's "normal." Please help if you have any insight! Thanks!

The knots may be localized muscle spasms. I would guess you have problems with your facet joints or sacroiliac joints from what you said. Both of these sets of joints are often overlooked by doctors as sources of lower back pain. You may want to seek out an interventional pain management specialist in your area to help with the diagnosis and treatment. He may prescribe injections into these joints +/- physical therapy and medications.

I would ask your doctor for a referral to a physical therapist or if you are in a state with direct access you can go on your own.

The physical therapist (PT) will examine you and determine the cause of your back pain and then implement a treatment program to address any of their findings during the examination.

Go see a chiropractor. It sounds like you have knocked something out of alignment and may need an adjustment. Just make sure you see someone who insists on x-rays before adjusting you!

A physical therapist who specializes in back problems is your best bet. Ask whichever doc sent you for x-rays to refer you. A good way to find out which PT's are especially good, if you live in a city with a major sports team, is to call the team office and ask who they use for their players with back problems. I've had similar symptoms and was told my pelvis was "tipped" and I was given specific "corrections" to do. A firm mattress is a must for me.

sounds like lower lumbar strain. easy on bending and lifting let it heal. It can take a long time on some people.
just do what your orthopedic dr says
