Okay, say a band's been around for a while. You didn't know about it, but then a really good album came out and now you LOVE them. The "truer" fans who have been there from the beginning call you a poser and say you're "jumping on the bandwagon" because you didn't like them from the very start.

Does this necessarily make you a poser? Isn't it more reasonable to say that you just weren't aware of them?

No, you're right. New fans are great, they mean that the band that the original fans like is getting more popular. I make every effort to get people to like bands that I've liked for a long time because I enjoy sharing the music that I like with the people I like, or strangers for that matter!

I'll tell you the few things that do bother me a little bit about this situation. One is the recent fan who starts talking about the band as if they know everything about them. They recite every fact they know and assume that you know nothing about them. They'll often pretend like they're teaching you something about the band. The other thing that sometimes happens is that newbies will only listen to one album, or just a few songs from one album, or only the radio hits. They have little interest in the band's other music, but claim to be superfans based on the one album they like.

Granted, these opinions probably make me one of the douche bags you're talking about, but I'm not as bad as I sound. I only come across a few people per concert that strike me like this. I think I'm getting old!

If you were never aware of them it would be pretty hard to call you a poser. Take all the classic bands such as The Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc. Generations will forever become fans that were born years and years later. For somebody that is going to like a band say today but not yesterday just because it's the "in thing" well then, yeah.

I SO hear you on this one!! I'm very much a pop girl, and when I started going out with my last boyfriend, he introduced me to My Chemical Romance, who at that stage weren't as well known as they are now ( I had never heard of them) . Its not the sort of music I would normally listen to, but I listened because I knew it was something he liked, and ended up really liking their stuff! Then he got all miffed, because it was around the same time that their stuff became more commercially known, so apparently I was jumping on the bandwagon!! HE INTRODUCED THEM TO ME!!! Grrr.
Also, I was accused of jumping on the Hanson bandwagon, when I had HATED them for ages. Actually, I randomly heard their stuff from their most recent, independant album, and thought- "that's kind of good, they're actually pretty talented!!" Hello, 7 years after everyone else has forgotten them- hardly a bandwagon in sight I'd say.
Don't worry about what other people think. When people say to me "oh you've jumped on the bandwagon", I just say: "Yeah well everyone elsewas on it- it looked like a fun ride and I didn't want to miss out!"

No it does not. And a "true" fan would just be happy that another person has come to love a band they have known for years. It gets on my nerves when people call other posers for things like that..,..these are also the same people who call bands "sell outs" just because they become popular.Listen to what you want...and just be glad you found them late or not if it makes you happy!

Of course. It's not your fault you didn't know. I didn't know about a lot of bands or songs before they came out with a new album that I fell in love with. And who are these "truer fans" to think they have the right to tell you what bands you can and can't like? If they were true fans of a group, they'd be happy just to have someone else join their rankings. Sounds pretty stupid to me.

Your not a poser...if you didn't know about them, then you didn't know about them...they may have not been well known enough yet. True fans wouldn't care as long as you enjoyed the music as well, and supported the band by purchasing there music!

Some things are only important to 16 year olds, as in poseurdom.

Take it from the Digital Underground and Do Whatchyalike.

Perfectly reasonable to say that.
You could also say to the "longtime" fans that their 'message' in their music just didn't reach you until you got to a point in your life where you could 'get it'.

Anyone who considers themselves a "true" fan should be happy their band is gaining MORE fans regardless of HOW or WHEN.

You're right. I just hope it's a classic band like The Who or The Beatles we're talking about here. ;)

I don't think it makes you a poser. If you didn't know about them you didn't know.
