A question of colour has to be one of the most sensitive out there.
I don't think I've ever seen anybody who is truly white (although Michael Jackson is having a bloody good go at it).

But i guess at the end of the day we will always tend to categorise people it's human nature (if it wasn't by colour it would be by the size of your nose or ears etc)

So i guess if you are not whitey pink you must be something else black is as good a name as any other (as i said I'm far from white) but i find it intriguing that "we" call oriental people exactly that rather than Yellow.

So i fear black will probably remain so for the foreseeable future until we as a species learn to see beyond the colour of our skins.

Good god don't i spout some bo**ocks sometimes.....

Perhaps someone can answer why do black people (as i think general consensus is having us call black people) find being refered to as "coloured" as being offencive..

Depends on the attitude of the describer.

You can put emphasis on the different words of a sentence and that would provide different meaning.

One thing I don't understand, as the asker has suggested is that "why it is OK when a black person describes others as black and it is not OK when a white person describes other as black?"

BTW I am US citizen with asian ethnicity.

i have noticed that when a white person wants to describe a black person they get very self concious. they will describe everything but the person's skin colour:

" oh y'know the lady with the black hair in the red coat...."
and then when you say:

"ohhhhh! you mean the black lady there..." they feel relieved that you have said the word "black".

Why not just ASK?!!!

It is a common perception that white people know very little of anything other than themselves so it will come as no surprise to anyone that you do not know.

and the response to your question is NO - black people do not mind being called black. And yes, we know that most of us are brown skinned, but it is a political statement not a description of hue.

If they are, you just offended them. I don't think black is racist because everybody uses black. But if I was a black person I might get a little offended because they are not literally black but dark skinned.

I don't mind being called asian because I am asian. What else would you call me if you did not know my exact origin.

I'm not offended by being called black. I do tend to get a bit tickled though, because I have yet to see a person who is truly the color "white"or "black". Not even the people in Africa who tend to be deep shades of brown. The correct term for white/black would be more like peach and brown :)

I am not offended by it. I actually prefer the term Black to African American. I am a mixture of African, Native American and Caucasian.

Some Blacks prefer the PC term African American - but the term Black is totally acceptable.

Hey - I assumed that you are in the U.S. - If not, no worries - you're on the right track!

Best wishes!

Coming from the Bay Area Cali, I say no. Besides, do white people get offended if they aren't called European Americans?
