Because the female betta doesn't have as showy of fins as the male. It used to be that you couldn't even find a female with good coloration - most were brown with a few stipes with MAYBE some color on the tail (see pic:http://aquaworld.netfirms.com/homepage/Betta.jpg). But, that's changing now: http://www.flippersandfins.net/Images/BettaFemaleEggyA.jpg. Besides having more color, you can get bicolors: http://www.najrickbettas.com/images/Victoria2_Small.jpg, http://www.aquaria.info/modules/gallery/albums/DaSauce-Kewl-Fish/female_betta.jpg. Still, they're not as spectacular as the male (some people don't even recognize them as a betta). So maybe stores are afraid they won't sell them?

Talk with a manager at your local petshop - they should be able to order one for you, even if they don't usually carry them. I work in a pet store, and we always try to fill customers' requests.

Go to http://www.ibcbettas.com/chapters.htm to see if they have a chapter close to where you live. IBC is the International Betta Congress--it's international (duh) and is the organization that sets betta standards (fin shape, size, colors, etc.). People organize chapters in their areas and many of these people have extra fish they are willing to part with (and they are usually good betta keepers and could help you if you have other betta questions). You can also go to Aquabid.com to look at the various betta auctions--there are female bettas for sale but nowadays so many sellers on that site are in S.E. Asia so you have to deal with importation and shipping usually costs more than the fish.

I had the same problem. Of course, I did not know a thing about Betta Fish But I learned two things:

1. Betta's that are all one soild color, with no other coloring but one are females.

2. Females seem to live longer than males. I had a gorgoues Blue and purple one with a green tail, and my cousin got a soild orange one. I went through 5 males before I stopped (this was all in a year or two) getting them. My cousins was still alive 4 years later untill it died.

Check for ones with soild colorings and that should help..

Good Luck!

Different regional suppliers offer different fish. Females are as colorful as males and YES they can be multiple colors. I don't know where on earth people get the idea that females are less colorful. Looks at breeder sites dumb people, females have the same pigment possibilities as males. They can even be bred for long fins.

Well, it might be because the female betta fish are a lot less colorful, therefore might not really be the most customer attracting. The males tho are quite colorful, in order to attract the females for mating.
