They do it for the all mighty dollar...It is as simple as that...

Update: There have been some recent events that may end slaughter in this country.
First, The Texas appeals court upheld the 1949 law banning horse slaughter in the state of Texas. As of yesterday the 2 Texas plants were closed down until they can file with the Supreme court. It is highly unlikely that the Supreme Court will hear this case. American Airlines and Delta airlines (transporters of horse meat) can no longer haul horse meat out of the country as it violates there own shipping policy.
Secondly, The House of Representatives are going to vote again on the Horse Slaughter ban law soon. Then it will go to Congress for a vote...
There are several yahoo groups dedicated to ending horse slaughter. Feel free to join http://groups.yahoo.com/group/anotherchance4horses/

I completely agree with you that horse slaughter is a cruel and brutal act, horses are companion animals and are fearful when faced with death, unlike a cow, chicken, & pig. Horses fight and struggle to survive, there is video of them having their throats cut while still lashing out at their captures.

Horse Slaughter facilities in the United States are not humane...Don't let the pro slaughter advocates fool you, they say only the old and lame and non-trainable are slaughtered...That is crap. Why would any slaughter house want minimal meat on the bone...They want fat and healthy, young and tender as they say.

If other cultures want to eat horse meat so be it just not American horses...They need to raise their own. That way they can control the poisons that they are putting into their bodies...Lets not forget we worm and vaccinate our horses and many of those items are carcinogenic (cancer causing).

Only 1% of the entire horse population in the US is slaughtered. Pro- Slaughter groups claim that the slaughtered horses will be neglected or abused and will be un-wanted. Now, Realistically, how difficult is it for 1% of anything to be re-absorbed into it's community...

As an equine-oriented veterinary student, I feel your pain! I don't believe your link is working, so here is a link to a video from the Humane Society:
http://www.hsus.org/video_clips/stable_to_slaughter.html

If you would like to know more info regarding why some people (including some equine vets) are against the slaughter ban, you can see the American Association of Equine Practitioners' position on this issue here: http://www.aaep.org/pdfs/AAEP_Position_HR503.pdf

While I see the problems with the wording and implications of the slaughter ban, I personally believe that it is the first step in improving the treatment of horses and addressing the causation of overpopulation.

What is with people on this board? Are you seriously that ignorant to other cultures? Not all slaughter houses are how you think they are. There is humane slaughter as well- the problem is that the bad cases are used as anecdotal cases that are supposed to apply to all. Please do not form a strong opinion until you research both sides....or are a little older.
There are a lot of unwanted horses. There is not room for them all. Same with every animal. The social and actual carrying capacity do not match. Horse meat is used to feed zoo animals (American Zoo Assoc. accredited zoos) because it is tender, more nutritious and carries less disease risk than beef.
Horse meat is commonly served in other countries. Guinea pigs are sold roadside on sticks in parts of South America. Some asian countries serve dog meat. A few islands consider it an honor (and in order to pass on) to be cannabalized by your relatives when you die.

I am a horse owner and I am very against inhumane slaughter, but you should not base all cases off of a few bad cases (a humane slaughterhouse would never make the news) and not understanding the fact that there are unwanted animals out there.

The sad truth is, people like meat. Don't get me wrong, I am against horse slaughter too, but think about it...horses are being slaughtered in the US mainly for export to other countries.

I am against the methods of slaughter used, but I am also an agriculture student and I have seen videos about animal slaughter. It looks gruesome, but in most cases animals are humanely slaughtered. Yes there are exceptions, but for the most part those horror stories are overblown.

Back to horses. When you look down at a piece of fried chicken or a hamburger, do you see the image of a living chicken or cow being killed? I know I don't. Unless you are totally a vegiterian, then you eat real live animals. People that eat horse meat grew up eating it, and in their culture that's what you do. To them it's like eating cows and chickens. In the US soldiers ate horse during the wars when they had nothing else to eat.

Like I said, I'm totally against it, but I understand where the people are comming from.

I also believe horse slaughter is horrible, but so is pig slaughter, cow, lamb, etc. That is why I am a vegetarian. I refuse to eat other animals and support the slaughter industry.

If it really bothers you, the best thing you can do is tell other people about it and be a vegetarian.

It all boils down to the almighty dollar. Companies abroad are finding horse meat a delicacy and demanding it, so the slaughtering of horses is profitable to greedy companies in the USA.

let me ask you this- why arent you campaigning for cow slaughter? Or pig slaughter? Or chicken slaughter? As a horse owner it does truly upset me to know that there are at least 3 government owned and operated plants that deal in horse slaughter and horse slaughter is a very upsetting thing. As a vegetarian ( for religious purposes) it upsets me that other animals are being slaughtered too. Instead of just campaigning to end horse slaughter, lets campaign to end animal slaughter, period, end of story.

it is horrible the way they kill them... first they have to go through all the horror of watching the other horses die and then they get shot in the with a dart gun to stun them and then hoisted into the air from their rear leg and their troat is slit.... and so on.... I just feel sorry for them and I think it is wrong.... that people would do that to horses......

I am against overt cruelty to animals, but they are animals after all, and I'm sorry, but the same laws (murder) do not apply to animals.

ps. your link does not work - not that I would be interested enough to watch it.
