The drive from Montego Bay to Negril is about an hour and a half to two hours. I am not familiar with the "Beaches" hotel experience but I stayed at a hotel just a few minutes up the street called Rondel Village which I enjoyed. The area is very quiet and safe. I was approached by Jamaicans but in a harmless manner. They were only trying to make a living. A simple no will let them know that you are not interested. Don't let anyone discourage you from staying in Jamaica because as in any other country there are good and bad people so rest assured you'll be safe.Enjoy!

I know you will have a wonderful time if you are open minded and not fussy. The food at the resort is good and the beach is very calm you can walk out into the sea for a while and the water will only reach your knees, rooms comfortable and the staff very friendly. Water sport is good but only if your are spending more that one day if not you will end up checking out early and not really enjoy the resort. That's my opinion. I know you pay alot for the resort but take time at least 1hr away from the resort to visit Rick's Cafe it's breath taking and I promise you will have a good time.

Find a resort with everything that you would want to do when you get there. They will tell you when you get to the hotel not to leave because it isn't safe. Jamacians are not kind to tourists.

I won't go back.
The resorts are okay- the reality of it was more difficult to deal with. Starving people outside the fancy walls. I can't deal with that again. It was horrible for me.
