J/K. Just trying to grab attention. I want to know what Americans with African ancestry (African Americans) think of rap today. Doesn't it seem like modern day blackface? This question is aimed toward African Americans, or whatever the politically correct term of the year is, but I'd also like to hear from others.

I think the funniest thing I've ever seen on the rap "lifestyle" was when a group named YoungBloodz was on MTV Cribs. They had big chains, big plasma TVs, but that's about it. I didn't see any of the cars I saw in their first video & the roof of the house looked like it could have caved in at the first drop of rain. The bedset looked like it could have been bought at WalMart. It was just an all-around "hood" house.

I am black and I do not listen to that rap crap anymore. I used to be a huge rap fan but around 2002 I started getting sick of it and in 2003 I stopped listening to it all together. I only listen to gospel and occasional (on rare occasions I might listen to some r & b).
I do not appreciate the way rap artist disrespect and degrade black females in their videos. I do not appreciate the way they glorify the "bling bling" mentality. They make it seem as if having material goods is better then being a good person or just having plain old common sense.
When will we as a people stop feeding into this negativity and grow up. Its time to ban this rap crap and stop letting our kids think that his kind of lifestyle is acceptable.

Like most music being excreted out today rap is just another rewind of old BS garbage with the same beat, same gangster or I'm so fly mess.
Just like pop is filled with boobastic barbie twits singing about how they are ready for it and rock is a bunch of retardo same 4 chord same whiny trying to be hard love song crap about lithium and alcohol mess.
These new generations of teen and twenties have NOTHING TO SAY!!! They are spoiled, overindulged, vacuous, dumb dumbs!!!!!!!
To think, the generation that brought us Hendrix, Dylan, Gaye, Creedence, Pfunk, Earth Wind...raised these pretentious, wanton bastards.
AND stop thinking all black Americans want to be called African Americans AND stop being so damned offended by it. Go pick on the Greek and Italian Americans for a change. Or those Irish up in Boston!

Well yeah.. if all you are exposed to is mainstream rap. A lot of it does suck. But, there are plenty of great rap music out there. Check out Common, Dead Prez, Little Brother, Roots etc. Little Brother even has an album called The Minstrel Show. Great album!

I have wondered why it is so popular among the race myself. It just seems so degrading to the women and the race. One could argue that it talks of the black American's plight in society, but there is no excuse for rapping ****** this and hoe that and ***** that while glorifying drug use, violence, rape, etc. (by the way, this applies to all types of "angry" music...)
I SAW THAT EPISODE TOO! It was funny because what stood out to me were the milk crates they were using as bookshelves and stuff.

Once Tupac and Big died everything went to hell. Most Rappers (JayZ and Nas excluded) are trying to prove themselves as hard. Back in the day they were trying to relay a message, that is gone now.

I think rap is stupid! It's all about criminals and hoochies. Why would anyone think the lifestyle rappers rap about is something anyone with a brain would want? It's punk rock for black people is what it is!
