Methane is the gas that primarily makes up natural gas. Its molecular formula is CH4, and although it only has a lifespan if about 9.6 years in the atmosphere, it is 24 times more damaging to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, making it a bigger immediate threat. Also, contrary to popular belief, cows and other livestock do not release methane by farting, but rather by burping.
