Good questions. Too complex for this forum on the whole.
It is and has been possible to sustain free speech during war time in this country to varying degrees. But there have been limits. Its your job to research them. Many Americans chose to be imprisoned, or to support the war effort as a defensive matter as long as it did not effect their unwillingness to carry arms or encompass the deaths of other human beings.
There were indeed voices who spoke out about American entry into both WW1 and WW2. It was generally thought that this was Europes problem. And we did avoid becoming activily involved as combatants for a good long time in both cases. We became involved in WW2 early on with massive aid in the form of Lend Lease, to both the British and the Russians. The US did continue to attempt to negotiate with the German Government up until our entry to the war. We did not enter it officially nor was there are large American consenses for doing so until the Pearl Harbor attack, and then the ensuing declaration of war from Germany a few days later.
The destruction of European Jewry has almost nothing to do with the matter you are discussing. We, the British, the Free French, the Polish Govt. in Exile and all the rest did not ever invade at Normandy to discover the death camps in central Europe.
(The number of dead you discuss were mostly already dead or on their way to it, when Fortress Europe was invaded.) However obscene the Holocaust is, the number of dead pales in contrast to the whole numbers of the war.

Technically, all wars are inevitable. Everything can be prevented before it happens. The only problem is in the beginning whats seem like a good idea, turns into a bad idea, and by that time people realize it, it's too late to do anything about it. Hitler could have been prevented from ever coming to power in Germany, but obviously that didn't happen, leading to the inevitable World War II. Negotiations with Hitler would have never worked and would have only led to more appeasement. And we all know that appeasement only makes the aggressor more aggresive because it gives him a sense of power over other countries and the thought that other countries will continue to give him things to stop him from starting war. However, Hitler did eventually start war, which he was going to do from the beginning when he first took power in Germany.

Dont forget that America didn't enter the war until they had to - that makes the entire situation more difficult. Before the safety of the homeland was at risk there was definately a strong current of trying to avoid entering the war. All wars are bad of course because it is not a matter of who ultimately enters into the conflict but of the conflict itself. It is necessary and understandable for a country to defend itself.
But for the other side there are many excuses for wars, but if you look at history then it can be seen that if there is really a case of international need, such as the genocide in Rwanda, nobody is there to help if it is not in their own interest.
I do think that the involvement of the U.S in the 2nd world war was ultimately good because it put an end to the horrors of the Hitler regime, and no he could not be negotiated with because even if the war had been stopped, which I doubt as Hitler was insanely power hungry - or just insane- if you had left him in power germany would still be supressed by the nazi regime - not all germans wanted to be hounded in a police state.
Another thing to consider about wars, which applies to any war, is that they are often led by politicians and not people. How many people went into the streets to beg their leaders to stop the war in Britain. Even those soldiers who went into the war with enthusiasm and faith in what they were doing often come home disillusioned and broken. Look at the vietnam war - and also at WWII german soldiers

War is never good, but it is often unavoidable. Sometimes it must occur to have the best outcome; the situations would often be worse if the war had not occurred (like in WWII).
