For myself it was a stabbing pain that started in my butt cheek and radiated down my leg. It was an extremely sharp pain that would take my breathe away that mostly happened when i stepped down on my heel. I had a massage therapist that helped and when she worked on the area it would hurt during the process but brought great relief for a few days afterwards, but it always came back.I didn't have any lower back pain that was due to the sciatica I was just sore from being pregnant. I no longer have problems now that my baby has been born

You should check this sciatica natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica. Try a reputable chiropractor ASAP!

Yes, I've had sciatica. It was awful. I stayed late at work to finish up some reports. I leaned forward in my chair and felt something like an electric shock that went from my lower back to my knee. (left side) Not really painful just an odd feeling. But, by the next morning I could hardly get out of bed. Fortunately it was the weekend. I didn't go to the doctor or chiropractor because I didn't want anyone messing with my back. I'd heard nightmare stories from friends. For about three months, I slept with a heating pad. I took tylenol to get to sleep. I sat on a strategically placed pillow that I designed and made for myself. I made another one for my car. I bought myself an office chair that was comfortable. My supervisor ordered me the same exact chair for work. (Bless her). When I got to a place where I could get out of bed in the morning and move without thinking about every step, I started walking. I started s l o w. I mean three minutes of walking and moved up to 30 minutes a day over about three months. I essentially walked out my sciatica. It took almost two years for it to disappear--sort of. When I sit too long in one position, I can feel stiffness in my back. No pain thank heavens. The experience made me a believer in take care of your back. I still walk at least five days a week and sometimes more. Then I injured my knee. That's another story but that sciatica was worse. I do remember reading something about the pain pattern of sciatica. If it goes from the lower back to the knee it's not as bad as what you have--lower back to ankle. I'd web search this if I were you because one symptom of a disk problem is sciatic nerve pain clear down passed the knee.

Sciatica (for me) is like someone is pinching my bum cheek with giant metal calipers, and the nerve down the back/side of my leg is painfully tingly. It hurts to sit, stand, walk, etc. Clothes hurt touching my leg. It really hurts to sit on a cold toilet seat! Changing body position doesn't help relieve the pain.

My sciatica got incredibly painful at 38 weeks til I thought I was going to scream!

Good luck. You can see a chiropractor or your normal health professional if you're having lots of pain.

If you have radiating or "shooting" pain running down one of your legs in addition to the tailbone and butt pain, then you have sciatica. Sometimes you can even have sciatica with minimal radiating pain. See a chiropractor - it will make you feel better.

My Dr. told me that I was having sciatic pain when I complained of having a sharp pain every time I stepped down on my right leg. The pain would go from my right leg all the way up my right side to my lower back. I had a very hard time walking-I looked like I was limping all the time. It lasted for about 3 or 4 weeks for me (from about my 36th week of pregnancy-I am now 41 weeks pregnant). The pain just went away for me. I guess I got lucky because my Dr. told me that it will usually last until you deliver but sometimes when the baby drops or just changes position it will go away.
