There's a huge amount of real good indie bands over here in Britain at the moment. Some of my personal favourites are (in no order):
1.The View - really good new band, just got a new album out
2. Kaiser Chiefs - you may have heard of them already - "I predict a Riot" etc
3. Razorlight - great indie band - most known for "Golden Touch" and others
4. Snow Patrol - "Chasing Cars" is one of my favourite songs at the moment
5. The Bravery
6. Muse - although they may be classed more as rock, rather than indie. Amazing band though.

Neutral Milk Hotel is a good indie rock/folk band. Check out their album "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea."

British: Oasis, Blur, Libertines, The Verve.
Oasis would be my first choice. They're a band that's easy to get into (very accessible) and their catalog of songs is huge and really rewarding.
