I was in high school back then, so I remember it like it was yesterday!


Ronald Reagan was elected to office.

People were putting Gasohol in their vehicles.

The Pope (John Paul II) visited the U.S. (He had just taken over for the first John Paul I who had died very suddenly after taking over for the previous Pope.)

Mount St. Helens erupted.... ash everywhere! The weather was hazy all over the country for a few days after that.

The U.S. Hockey team beat the Russians and won the gold medal in the Winter Olympics.

The summer Olympics were boycotted by the U.S. team.

As I recall, it was one of the hottest summers on record where I live in Kansas. Lots of days way over 100 degrees.... miserable!

John Lennon was assassinated in December of 1980.
