I could be sitting at my desk, and it will just start making a ticking noise. Or I could be using my computer, and it will start making the noise. It's not a constant tick, it varies in time - like it will tick for 1 minute or 5 minutes. It's very annoying to listen to. I joked with my hubby the other night and told him I thought someone had installed a remote controlled bomb in it...cuz' thats pretty much what it sounds like. Might as well drip water on my forehead for an hour! Thanks for any help!

Depending on where the noise is coming from:
1. Physical interference with a fan. Inspect for dust or intrusions on all fans (power supply, MB, case, etc..) then clean with air.
2. Hard drive potential failure - intermittent clicking for a period of time then finally resulting in failure. Make a back up now before its too late. Always good to do anyways.
3. CD/floppy drive potential component failure. The drives may cycle up and down so it makes the noise.
4. Water cooling component installed may cause contraction of metal thus result in ticking. Very rare.

Best bet is 1 or 2. I've had a hard drive make a ticking/clicking noise for 2 weeks then suddenly fail. The ticking in the hard drive is its failure to read certain tracks, or going past track zero. Mostly PCs are silent running and has very few actual moving parts. Inspect your PC very carefully and take proactive measures such as cleaning and backing up data.

Quite possibly it is in the fan. Either a bit of dust or paper has been sucked into the intake. The paper gets bent down after being hit for 1 minute or so and then recovers only to start the noise again. If not paper then it may well be a bearing in the fan clicking . Check the fan to see if dust or debris is collected around the unit. Use a blower or vacuum cleaner to fix it.
The only moving parts in a computer are the intake fans and the one over the cpu unit which could also be the culprit

I even have examined small and large battery backup gadgets. as quickly as I unplug the small battery backup unit from wall potential with a working laptop or computing device gadget on and plugged into it, the small battery backup unit makes a ticking noise, and likewise sounds an alarm, which ingredients me adequate time to log out the computing device gadget. i did no longer press the reset button, so i do no longer comprehend if the ticking noise could have long gone away by ability of doing so. the better battery backup unit delivers greater time to close down and does no longer make any ticking noise. under is a link to it so which you will discover what the large battery backup unit looks like.

It's probably one of the cooling/ventilation fans. I had a similar problem that fixed itself when I took the vacuum brush to the fans.
