I agree with the self weaning. I couldn't force myself to take something so precious away from my son because it was something I wanted to do. Nursing meant so much to us, such a great source of bonding and comfort for him. We self weaned at 18 months and would of gone longer if he hadn't. :)

Breastfeeding is something both you and your baby do so this is actually a decision that you both have to weigh in on. My babies both just nursed less and less as they aged and when they were 15months they were nursing maybe once a day, I made sure that they did not nurse at bedtime and just didn't offer, they didn't really notice. Forcing your baby to wean before he/she is ready can be difficult and frequently comes with a lot of guilt. Babies have phases, if you catch a phase where the baby is not terribly interested in nursing but is interested in other things then weaning just happens. Waiting until two or older is recommended by the World Health Organization but a considerable bit of the world does not have access to adequate food and water to foster good growth in preschoolers. America is abundant in food and water and it is not necessary. We reward and foster independence and so fo many children in America, weaning is best accomplished between 13months and two years. It is always up to the mom and baby, as long as mom is taking into consideration what baby wants and needs, it doesn't really matter.

I wanted to breastfeed until at least 12 months, maybe longer. My daughter had other ideas - At 11 months she started refusing breastfeeding (and baby food too!) because she was more interested in table food. So I guess you could say she weaned herself. I am now pregnant with #2, and again I plan to breastfeed for at least a year.

I nursed my first child until she was nine months, but I nursed my other two until they were two. They were both weaned about 2 weeks before their 2nd birthdays. For the last 6-9 months of nursing, it was only three times a day; they were eating and drinking but I figured rather than cow milk at meals, I could continue to nurse and it made weaning very easy.

I will not wean my son, I will wait until he weans himself.

Currently he is almost 11 months and breastfeeding at least 12 times a day. If not more.

The World Health Organization recommends AT LEAST two years. Here is a list of benefits to breastfeeding past 12 months.

I could only breastfeed for 3 mths with my daughter due to problems, but with my son he was breatfed until he was 22 months. But he was only feedin at night before he went to sleep.

I would have let him wean himself but i ended up in hospital with phemonia and was not aloud to have him with me, so my husband did all the hard work with him crying before bed.

I just started weaning my son. He is 2 years 3 months. I started by cutting out the day time nursies. He complained for a week. We still nurse at night and co-sleep. Just taking it one day at a time. Next week, I go away for my first night away from my son, so we will see how it goes. My husband is ready for the challenge!

My children both self weaned when they were 8 1/2 months. I would have stopped at one year though.
