They probably both have their places. DPI isn't everything -- otherwise dye sublimation printers wouldn't have a place at all.
Use what suits you.
For myself, I have the lot, including two color laser printers and a dye sublimation printer.
The most trouble-free method of color printing for home use is certainly laser and the results can be stunning.
Dye-sub is a professional technique but the small dye sub printers for home use are for "a quick pull" to give a "proper" print to someone there and then.
For larger size very important prints I get them done in a professional lab far, far cheaper and far, far better than you could ever get from an inkjet. You can do all the zooming and cropping etc. on the lab's website which has masks for all the popular sizes.

A photo printer will definitely give you more DPI than a laser printer will. Most photo printers are 4800x1200 dpi, and laser printers are usually 600x600 dpi. While laser printers are faster and the printouts will not smear, a photo printer will give you the best quality printouts.

Both are good for their own reasons
Photo printer - if you want to print photo's and want to look the best of quality - this printer can be used for printing out normal docs, but not efficiently as laser
laser printer - best at printing normal documents out in large quantities, photos can be printed but not as high quality as a photo printer.,
