I travel extensively and use www.kayak.com to find the best fares. Kayak searches about 20 or more web sites, including many airline sites. It will return all the fares and schedules. You may then pick the best one, and you will be forwarded to that site.
I live in Denver, and tickets to Europe generally cost me about $850. in the month of May.
You can also try www.bestfares.com. This is an agency and a consolidator. For certain flights, you will need to become a member for about $50.
Good luck and have a great time!

My best experiences have been to fly to NY first (jetBlue or one of the majors on a cheap fare), then purchase my trip to Europe separately. But, you have to understand, that you want to go at one of the most expensive times of the year.
Right now, you can fly R/T to Europe from LA for less than $500 - it will be double or maybe even triple that in May.

I always check Yahoo Travel for the lowest, then go directly to that airline's web site and check again. Sometimes, I get a better deal that way.

find out what airlines fly to the city you want to go to and sign up for their email alerts. They will be advertising cheap flights for that time of year now or soon.

Or better yet call your travel agent for a consolidator fare, they are lower then the web prices and travel agents will mark up at their discretion, but still reflect better pricing.
