And she checked my cervix to see if I was dilated ( by the way not fun not fun at all and it should have a law against OBGYN's having fingernails) And she said I was 55% effaced and 1cm dilated which according to a lot of people is good but it left me somewhat confused. I checked my pregnancy book no info and tried looking it up and way to many things of personal stories to go through. So any advice would be great

I know how you feel. I had the exact exam two days ago. They're not fun at all...I'm not looking forward to them when I am in labor. When I was checked I was 3 cms and 70% effaced, and I was told I still had about a week to go before I have the baby. I'm hoping I have it a lot sooner. I was also told by one of my friends who just had a baby that after he first exam, she was 1 cm and two days after her dr. poked around in there she had her baby. My dr. also told me that being dilated/effaced at all on your first appointment is a good thing, because it shows that your cervix and uterus are working and preparing correctly. However depending on the person and her body it depends on how soon the baby will be born. She suggested walking and sex, which was also suggest by my friend and other mothers i know, to speed up the process. You don't have too much longer.

it could still be a while...labor sucks in that aspect. I am 36wk4d and I am 3cm, and 50% effaced....I feel like it will be at any time with the contractions i get (though they are irregular) but I know it could still be a week. I know you dont wanna hear it but being 39 weeks I bet you carry to at least 40 weeks.....especially if this is your first baby. Im not sure what you are confused about either.. IF you are confused about what this means then hear is a brief run down. Effacement means "thinned out." You must be 100% effaced before the baby can be born. Your cervix starts out about 2-3 cm long and shortens/thins out from there. 55% means that you have only 45% left to go. You must also be a complete 10cm dilated to give birth. This can be a rather SLOW process, so hang in there....you gotta go all the way to 10! Hope this helps a bit! Good Luck

In order to have the baby, the cervix has to do 2 things. 1- efface, or thin out. It has to be 100% effaced. So your at 55% -more than halfway there! 2-dilate, or widen. It has to be 10 cm dilated. You'll probably get a little more dilated before you actually go into labor. Maybe you'll get to 2-3 cm. Then the rest will happen during active labor. It will happen soon. Your lucky! I'm only 24 weeks! Good luck!

the way it was explained to me was like this.compare your cervix to a full roll of paper towels.when its full your o%effaced.when its empty your 100% effaced.the effacement is your cervix thinning out in preparation for delivery.its actually better to be effaced then dialated cause thats what gets it all going.if you efface to 100 your delivery should be soon!however it can take forever to dialate!it took me a week to dialate to 3 from 2 and this is my 3 child!good luck!

you could ask for one, yet they're very ineffective and in many cases fairly painful, so in my view, i'd not difficulty. in case you at the on the spot are not at 3 cm, they maximum in all probability will only time table yet another appointment. some medical doctors sense comfortable doing an optional induction on condition that you're quite a concepts alongside already - it is a good concept, because the farther alongside you're, the more desirable in all probability your induction will prevail without complications.
