I was in labour 8 hours and I had alot of gas and air which made me feel drunk, I didn't have a clue what was going on. I was only a small person and it made me feel like I'd been drinking. Towards the end they gave me pethidine, I can't remember saying yes to that and it made no difference to me what so ever. I had to have a c section in the end because she was distressed and my pelvis was too small. The Epidural made me go completely numb, I couldn't feel anything from the waist down, I don't think they gave you the right dose because I had my c section after they gave me that.
Ahh right! I was well out of it so I haven't got a clue, gas and air worked a treat anyway.

I had pethidine which was crap, then later on a epidural after which i slep through a good part of the rest of my (38 hr) labour. I had a local to have an episiotomy and gas and air while i was stitched up. Epidural is the best by far.

I had the same as you for my first baby three years ago, and when I found out that I was having my second I said in my birth plan that I wanted an epidural again. However, Jack was born after a labouring at home for three hours before heading to the hospital, where he came out 17 mins after being born! I had absolutely nothing, not even gas and air, and if I were to have a third baby I would do it the 'Jack' way. It hurt like hell but was less sore afterwards.

I had Pethadine, Gas and air then an epidural with my first. I would never have another epidural again as it prolongs the labour too much. 2nd baby I had gas and air only coz she arrived so quick. 4 months ago I was one of my daughters birthing partners when my grandaughter was born and I had Gas & air for that (honest !!) xxxxxxxx

My wife is 36wks pregnant with our 3rd baby and with all her laboures she has used gas and air however with this pregnancy she also plans to try and use a tens machine as we have heard its great for easing the pains of labour. my wife suggests that you use a birthing ball if there available at your hospital during labour, we have one in the house and my wife sits on it regulary as it easys her back pain and takes the pressure of her pelvis. Another suggestion is to use a bath during the first stages of labour, warm water with drops of lavender can help relax you and ease the discomfort a little. I do believe that nothing will give you a pain free labour but once you have your baby in your arms it will have been all worth it. good luck

I prefer the "narcs." Demerol is the best I've had. They don't really kill the pain so much as just make you not care about it. I've never had an epidural, I've heard to many horendous things about them. Personally, to me, the worst part of labor is the contractions. The pushing doesn't bother me so much. Then again... my last one took about 2 maybe 3 pushes (my philosiphy is "the harder I push the sooner its over lol) and the one before her was born in the "sac" I didn't even push with her... she slid right out lol.

Epidural is the best way to go. Any other types of drugs can effect the baby but if you have a good epidural its a cake walk!
