in this instance go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com
run the online scan keeping the browser window open and do not browse or open other web pages.
for best results as the scan can take awhile (it checks everything on your computer including some locations othe scanners can not gain access to). start the scan and the turn off your display panel NOT the compuiter, just the display panel or CRT monitor.
now go get a meal or go shopping or go out for the night. when you get back to your computer allow the program to clean what it can and delete the uncleanable.
restart your computer then repeat the scan just to make sure the scan cleaned your computer.
now install the free trial of http://www.trendmicro.com pc-cillin internet security 2007. in my view the best malware defense suite on the market today. I user it on my systems and have never had a problem with it.
viruses as you put it are just the tip of the ice berg so to speak.
you need a defence package that can cope with anything and every possible type of attack.
such as spyware, trojans, worms viri etc. etc.
the trend micro suite does that. and more such as integrating with outlook or outlook express to scan all your incomeing and out going mail. it can guard agains phishing atacks on the internet for example you can set it to warn you when you browse to a site on the threat level on that site site is safe, or site is dangerous.
for example tiscali in the uk comes up often as dangerous mainly due to the level of spam and other malware on there servers. speaking here as tiscali seems to lax in its cleaning up of its servers. i frequently have a lot of spam in my tiscali mail box, yet almost none in the last week on yahoo. is this because yahoo have read my advice on keeping a mail server spam free? If so then they owe me money a fee of £10,000.00 should suffice. I'll expect a cheque in the mail sometime in the next five years, joke.
but serioulsly security starts at your own computer. you need a quality malware defense suite.
you need to run a scan for .eml on your computer read and delete them all backing up any that you think are important to a cd or DVD for example.
once done repeat the step in your email reader outlokk and outlook express does not use .eml to store your mail so you need to open your reader and again copy your mail you need to keep to a cd or DVD then delete from the program.
this is the first of many steps to help keep your system clean.
I know i have strayed a little but system security is a bug bear of mine. i always try to keep my system as secure as i can. though as new threats are detected all the time no system can be 100% secure.
good luck.

Go to spybot.com. A free download, and works great. Another free program is AVG-free. Both of these will clean up your computer.
