I like books with great well developed characters I can relate to.
Currently I am reading some Kurt Vonnegut (Slaughter House Five) and I'd have to say it is my favorite in a long time and it has historical content!
It is a 1969 novel by best-selling author Kurt Vonnegut. One of his most popular works and widely regarded as a classic; it combines science fiction elements with an analysis of the human condition from an uncommon perspective, using time travel as a plot device and the bombing of Dresden in World War II, the aftermath of which Vonnegut witnessed, as a starting point.
When the book was released, the bombing of Dresden was not widely known and was rarely discussed by veterans and historians. The book led to an increased awareness of the bombings and a reevaluation of the justifications given for aerial bombing of cities by the Allies during the war.
Here are some other favorites:
1. The Wold According to Garp by John Irving
2. Fire Starter by Stephen King
3. Mona Lisa Overdrive by William Gibson
4.The Stand by Stephen King
5. Jurassic Park by Michael Cricton
6. The Language of God by Francis S. Collins
7. Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer
8. Enders Game by Orson Scott Card
9. Blue Beard by Kurt Vonnegut
10. Sideways by Rex Pickett

The Alex Rider Adventures, and The Gate Keepers, both series by Anthony Horowitz. The book series that I'm just starting is The Young Bond Adventures by Charles Higson. All three series are really good if you like the adventure type.

If you're into satirical fiction, Gregory Maguire has a few books that I LOVED! He takes classic fairy tales and stories and puts his own twist on them.
He's most known for "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West", which was made into a broadway production.
It is followed by "Son of a Witch". The first is a twist on the Wizard of Oz, shown from the Wicked Witch of the West's perspective. The second book tells the story of her son, Nor. I loved both!
He's also written "Mirror, Mirror" (based on Snow White), "Confesssions of an Ugly Step-sister" (Cinderella), "Lost" (Ebenezer Scrooge).
Hope you enjoy!

This depends on the genre you prefer. I love to read just about anything but my favorites are the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, and A Breath of Snow and Ashes. She writes a kind of history, romance series. You can do a google search for Diana Gabaldon to get more specific details about her books. I also like Dean Koontz. He writes more horror based books or very sci-fi. He has MANY books, way too many to list, but some of my favorites are Servants of Twilight, Dragon Tears, Key to Midnight, Strangers, his Christopher Snow Books (Fear Nothing, Seize the Night) and his Odd Thomas books (Odd Thomas, Forever Odd, Brother Odd). Koontz is a very articulate author and can really scare the @#!* out of you. Again it really depends on what you like to read. But these are great authors and the short list of great books.
