No way! They are considered liberals of their time, but by today's standards, they would be very staunch conservatives!

The founding fathers were progressive free-thinkers in their time. They proposed a legal system free of interference from a king or from religion. They proposed "inalienable human rights" that are intrinsic to a living human being... not granted as a favor by governmental decree, but authorized by creation itself. They recognized a "creator" or God as the inspiration or the model for ultimate justice, and intended to build something that held up to that standard, but not based on a religion. They were spiritual men, Freemasons and Rosicrucians, some of them. They were heretics and rebels in the view of the church and the English royal establishment, which is part of why they came here.

Neither today's liberals nor conservatives come anywhere close to their forward thinking. These current leaders are all about power and their ideas bend according to what it takes to stay in power. They don't really stand for any principle except "the other side is wrong."

I'd have to say neither.

First the meaning of republican and democrat have reversed themselves since the early days of our country. Second some were more liberal some more Conservative. Benjamin Franklin originally supported the king of England and many wanted the make George Washington king. And people like to use those terms for someone when things aren't going their way. So to say they were either Conservative or liberal is only for those who are selling something.

Neither. Both are too liberal for what they invisioned.
Look first at the Articles of Confederation that they set up. This created a central government that had no power at all over the people. These men did not want government medling in their lives. In the Constitution they gave government a little more power but still not much as far a interacting with the people everyday lives.

Income Tax, welfare, troops in Iraq, senators elected by the people instead of the State legislatures, Social Security, Medicare, US forest Service, FBI, National Parks, No gold or silver backed money, Dept of Education, Homeland Security, the UN, the way the Supreme court sets policy, initiatives, OSHA, EPA, ETC, ETC.

The Declaration of Independance talks about things they were against then and would be against today.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.
(EPA, OSHA, IRS, ETC)

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the consent of our legislatures.
(National Guard troops activated for foreign police actions)

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
(our country acts often times from influence from the UN)

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
(many taxes we pay are hidden and put there by companies complying with regulations)

For depriving us, in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
(few 12 member juries, few grand Juries)

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
(used to be a Constitutional Republic, now we are more of Socialist Democracy)

Modern conservatives believe in limiting freedoms, and controlling people,,,,, This is a fascist worldview...... The founding fathers were opposed to the religious intervention in political decisions much like the gay marriage issue, which is a church issue not a political one,,,,
They also favored a govt representing the people, with eqaulity at the heart of everything.... We have de-evolved to the point where we have a ruling elite, the very thing they opposed so much,,,,,

The constitution was not intended to support liberals or conservatives. It is a declaration of freedom.

I doubt they would approve of the today's political rancor.

I think that they would consider OUR modern-day conservatives liberal.

God forbid they were forced to vote. They would feel the same way that many of us do, and be forced to pick the lesser of the two evils.

Our Founding Fathers despised Liberals.
The Liberals back then were Tories.
They supported Britain during the Revolutionary War.
They betrayed us, and then ran off to Canada.
