my boyfriend is collecting disability and social security benefits due to epilepsy, he is under the impression that as a person with a disability he is not allowed to have a substantial amount in his savings account....i am only talking about a couple thousand dollars.....he has been saving his $ and is scared they are going to stop his check if he has $ in his savings, so he is keeping his $ in other peoples accounts and i think it is risky trusting others with this kind of $

The answer depends upon what sort of disability benefits are being received by your boyfriend. There are two types that people refer to as "Social Security" benefits that are received by the disabled.

The first type is Social Security Disability Insurance or SSDI. This is for people who are disabled and who have worked long enough under the Social Security system to qualify for benefits. The length of work time required to earn benefits depends upon the age at which the person became disabled. The amount of benefits depends upon how much money the person earned while working. If he gets this type of benefit, it doesn't matter how much money he has saved up. If he gets a job that earns over something like $800 a month, he could lose his benefits.

The second type is not really Social Security Disability benefits, even though it is administered by the Social Security Agency.

This type is Supplemental Security Income or SSI. It's a type of welfare since it is for disabled people who have not worked long enough under Social Security to have become entitled to SSDI. In order to get SSI, in addition to being disabled, one cannot have over a certain amount of other assets or other household income. So, if your boyfriend is getting SSI, he could lose his benefits by saving money. He could also lose his benefits if he gets a roommate who makes enough money that it increases household income over the limit.
