I always appreciate some company that doesn't care if the house is a mess or the baby cries or if I haven't showered for a few days. I was really overjoyed when a friend would come over to watch a movie, play cards, just do something fun. I didn't have to hire a sitter, pump milk, dress up. I had a wonderful friend who came over and would sometimes help me clean, sometimes just watch the baby so I could shower, sometimes we would play a game or wach a movie, it was just an adult to be with. She didn't expect me to be 100% focused on entertaining her or being a good hostess, she was cool with me breastfeeding on my couch where it was most comfortable for me, she had no problem if we just chatted. If you are not that close, then just giving her a new DVD, a new book, a nice bubble bath or lotion set, something that women take for granted before they become mommies. An offer to babysit is usually welcome, but that may mean mom has to shower, dress, pump, get the baby ready. She may rather that you offer to do the grocery shopping for her, or pick something up on the way over. The most important thing to do is not expect to be entertained, be the hostess even at her house, bring food (a meal, snacks) and wait on yourself and her.
Thanks for asking, most people try hard but the baby can only wear 300 cute outfits the first month.

Sleep and someone to do some chores around the house. When I was in a childbirth class, the educator recommended making a list of chores that needed done around the place, be it mopping the kitchen, doing windows, or just straightening up the living room. She told us to post it near the front door so when someone would come over they had to mark off a chore and complete it before they could sit down and hold the baby and chat with mom. It gives mom a break, and it keeps lazy people from coming over and bugging mom when she needs rest and bonding time with baby. I would recommend getting together with some friends and assigning dates for chores/meals/visiting with mom to help her out.

are we talking a new mom/baby?
New mom's should get diapers, housework done for them, and/or a sitter so she can get some sense of "self" back. . mom's have a tendancy to be engulfed in "momminess" that they forget who they were prior!
If it's just a gift for a woman who has a child at home_ pampering items are a good idea. Like a certificate for a pedi or some candles. . . I LOVE candles : ) lol

Buy something for the mom...like a realy nice body lotion. Get something thats only for her as well as something pratcial for the baby. I have 4 kids and I loved gifts that were really for my personal use. When you have a new baby you do not have time to spend money on yourself or do anything for yourself.

a sling! It changed my life, would instantly calm the baby and allow me to move around and free up my arms. It's a luxury item to some so it might not be something you'd buy yourself because you really don't "need" it (like food/diapers) so I think it would make a great gift. Plus even you already have one it's nice to have 2 (or 3,4) in case one needs cleaning.. or you just want to switch it up. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_sling
