For some of us it is what we CHOOSE to do. I graduated in May got married in September and have spent the last 23 years with a wonderful man. Not everyday has been peachy but then again is it for anyone? I enjoy being married, I am raising my children in the same small town, but have repeatedly told my children you do not have to get married young. They are 20 and 16 and they know that there is more to life than getting married and living in the same small town. It is what the parents of the girls getting married tell them, and expose them to. Besides small towns would dry up in everyone moved off as soon as they graduated.

Do they? You're probably right. I grew up in a small town and I remember feeling that as a girl I had four choices: 1)Secretary 2)Nurse 3)Teacher and 4)Housewife. I couldn't grow my fingernails for the lifea me, I didn't want to be a hated teacher, my family was pushing me to be a nurse "because it would be a nice thing even if I was a wife and mother instead" which was expected of course, and nobody asked. So I became a nurse.
Getting married is the most direct route out of your parents home and out from under their direct authority. It seems like the door to being considered an adult.

Coming from a very small town back East, I must admit that from a young age, we were sort of "conditioned" to think that the "life" was to become a wife and mother, and we all aspired for it. Some girls marry for comfort, meaning the comfort of having someone take care of them. Some just want to be mothers. To be honest, though, I'll bet it's just how they're raised. You don't get encouraged that there's much else when you're a girl "livin' in a one-horse town".

It depends on what you mean by "small town" and "young". I come from a town of 22,000 residents which is considered small in my state, yet in Wyoming it would be considered a city. Someone mentioned earlier that they "waited" to get married until 21 and to me that is shockingly young to get married in the US at least. The average American female doesn´t get married until the age of 27. One of my friends got married at 23, which I think was too young because she´s already divorced 4 years later. None of my other friends are married and we´re all in our late 20s from the same "small town".

It's not just girls from small towns that marry young, other girls marry young. Maybe they grow up with the same people and have such a small social network that they pretty much know who they are going to be with so why not get married?

Not all girls from small towns marry early. I lived in a very small town and did not marry till I was 21, and then it was because I moved out of a small town and met men.

I got married to my college sweetheart 2 weeks after I turned 19. He was 20 and a half. We were in love. We were already engaged, and I had overbearing, overcontrolling parents. I grew up in a town of 600 people in Texas. Its not that we truly just wanted to get married, its the fact that both of us wanted to get out of our parents houses, economically 2 incomes are better than one, and well....sex whenever and however we wanted it sounded great, and we loved each other very deeply...i know everyone says yeah right ...at 19? He wanted to be my knight in shining armor from the abusive parents, and save me by getting me out and the only way we knew how was to get married. If I had it to do over again, I would have waited and figured out some other way to get out of the house......not because I wished I hadnt married him.....cause I am very happily married to him to this day....but because we, by no means were ready for marriage...financially, emotionally, maturity wise......It just would have been easier on every aspect if we had waited at least until we finished college. That would be my advice for my children and any other young couple who is just dying to get married and grow up way too quick.....

Because they are not educated and liberated, and they are more traditional, they have not moved on with times. Maybe in these small towns they are not exposed to other ways of life and thinking. People tend to be more liberated in large towns and cities, as that is where the life is, and you are meeting more people from different backgrounds, and these people can influence your way of thinking.

omgosh do you know me? lol! I did it, I thought I found true love, not much experience in that area at 17, so when it hit, it was like, "Oh this is it" and you miss all the obvious flaws and huge red flags, you're in love with the idea of being in love, this little country girl. I had 2 kids by the time I was 20, 3 at 25, now divorced, smarter and raising my children in a big city with much more knowledge and understanding of life!
