The terms come from the positioning of the conservatives and liberals in the English Parliament. Historically the conservatives sat on the right side and the liberals on the left. Even in the US Senate you can see during the State of the Union address that the right side of the Senate(the conservatives) would stand and applaud while the left side(the liberals) would just sit and listen.

It has to do with the Eagle standard. When an eagle's head is turned to the left wing, it means peace. When it is turned to the right wing, it means war. I think the left side of any living creature is where the heart is located, generally. The right side has to do with strength, dexterity, your right arm which you use the most and therefore, the will. Delicate balancing the will, the heart, the mind.

The English house of Parliament. The right side or "wing" is for the conservatives and the Left side or "wing" is for the liberals.

Actually, it was France.

The Third Estate (poor people) were separated from the Aristocrats in the French National Assembly following the French Revolution. Third Estate on the left, Aristocrats on the right... this separation quickly took on a more political meaning.

political spectrum.

if you are going to sort people out by making them line up you will have democrat (liberals) on one side and republican (conservatives) on the other

left is liberal (they begin with an L)

right is conservative (republican and right begin with an r)

that is the only explanation that has ever made sense to me
