To clean the soles you need a wire brush. You should buy one at the ballroom shoe store or on-line. It look slike this: http://www.featherdanceshoes.com/xcart/home.php?cat=19 Just brush the soles using gentle strokes until the dirt is gone, that is, until they don't look shiny anymore. I usually do it afer every practice. Don't worry, you won't wear them out by brushing. This shiny stuff is actaully dirt and floor wax. You want to get it out because it causes excessive wear on your shoes.

Satin (top of the shoe) is nearly impossible to clean. I scotch-guard my shoes when they are new, it seem to help a little, but only a little.

Snowflake is right. Some shoe repair places can help clean the tops. I would look for a shoe repair place near a dance studio. They seem to know what they're doing. :)
