It's a hatchback, SOHC 1.6L and sat outside for the last 10 months. When it was left it was running without any problems.

1. the starter motor is turning over fine
2. the old gas was pumped out until fresh gas came to the fuel injection manifold
3. the spark plugs and wires are all in fairly good condition

There was some kind of spark coming out of the ignition coil before the distributor, it looked like it might be a bit weak, though.

There were very sporadic and weak sparks at each spark plug, so I replaced the distributor cap, now there are sparks showing regularly at the plugs and they are all of equal strength, but still maybe a bit weak, no real snap to them.

4. With a spark plug out, I can see that fuel is being injected into the engine by the little puffs of aerosol gas coming out.

I think the problem must be with igniting the gas, I have tried to start the car with the air line completely disconnect, as well, in case it is blocked up, but this didn't help.

I cannot, for the life of me, find a replacement rotor that actually fits(I know how to install them). Aftermarket rotors are 80 thou. too small in the female triangle-like part that connects to the triangular shaft head coming out of the distributor. The dealership replacement is much closer, and almost exactly identical, but still just a touch too small, and will not fit, even with two millwrights trying their hardest.

---- NOTES
- the engine has decent oil in it
- I pumped the old fuel out all the way until fresh fuel is coming out of the fuel line that feeds into the fuel injection manifold

Thanks everyone.

Electrical wiring the biggest problem. I'm dealing with it myself with a 1995 Masda. Lights go off by themselves. Reverse lights, a memory.

If it sat for 10 months, there could be a number of little things...
1. Your battery. Did you change it? No alternating power through the battery can make it go dead as well.
2. The engine was sitting for a while. Did you put a little motor oil in each cylinder before turning her over? This is done so that there is at least some form of lubrication available to the cylinders before the oil can get pumped up there. If this wasn't done, there may be a little damage, and now loss of compression. You can get a compression tester at any auto parts store, and they're real easy to use. Try that.

Now, if the engine wants to start, but just doesn't, you may still have just a little bit of old gas in the lines.

Proabably stripped the cam belt-check for perfect compression through many revolutions. If ok then fuel injection is at fault. Bad electrics allong with gummed up fuel system must be addressed. Poor computer activity is akin to death of a salesman. Take time to asess the wirring and rubber parts because squirrels and othr rodents allong with many insects enjoy eating on these parts. Heating things up with a blowdryer can wake up sleeping parts.
