Yes it's true!!
About 75% of the cost is tax revenue.
I get most of mine from Europe though and pay about £2 a pack.
When the ban comes into force (not allowed in public buildings, workplaces etc) people are going to smoke less and the anti-smoking hysteria which grows daily here will make many give up! I expect the Government will find some other way to get the tax then.

The reason it costs £5 for a packet of cigarettes in the UK(actually with some brands it costs more than that) is because the Government keep putting tax on the things to try to discourage people from smoking.
Doesn't work though, those who are determined to smoke just seem to afford it somehow. they also get round the cost by getting cheap "duty free" cigs from the continent - they just pop over to France on the Eurotunnel and stock up on fags.
(Note: "fags" is British slang for cigarettes)
When I used to smoke (about 12 years ago) a packet of 20 Silk Cut was about £2.50 (don't know what that is in American $). I gave up smoking in 1997 and I'm so glad I did because as well as getting lung cancer I'd be spending every penny I earned on the damned things!

It's true. I've just looked it up on Tesco's website - 20 Marlboro are £5.18. Other things are really expensive too. What you pay in $ for a music CD we pay the same in £. Our petrol is also horrendously expensive as well - it's about £1.70odd a litre at the moment. It's taxation that makes it so expensive.
The tax on petrol is supposed to be to save the environment ie make it so expensive that no one can afford to drive anywhere, which would be OK in theory if trains weren't so expensive too. It costs me about £25 in petrol to visit friends near London (I live in central England). I checked out the train fairs for myself and my 6 year old and it would have been over £60 return. Now how is that encouraging people to ditch their cars?!

I'm making good profit with penny stock. Check here http://trade-pennystock.checkhere.info
Many new investors are lured to the appeal of a penny stock due to the low price and potential for rapid growth which may be as high as several hundred percent in a few days. Similarly, severe loss can occur and many penny stocks lose all of their value in the long term. Accordingly, the SEC warns that penny stocks are high risk investments and new investors should be aware of the risks involved but you can even make very big money. These risks include limited liquidity, lack of financial reporting, and fraud. A penny stock is a common stock that trades for less than $5 a share. While penny stocks generally are quoted over-the-counter, such as on the OTC Bulletin Board or in the Pink Sheets, they may also trade on securities exchanges, including foreign securities exchanges. In addition, penny stocks include the securities of certain private companies with no active trading market. Although a penny stock is said to be "thinly traded," share volumes traded daily can be in the hundreds of millions for a sub-penny stock. Legitimate information on penny stock companies can be difficult to find and a stock can be easily manipulated.
