An associate of mine was in town for business, and asked if she could leave her cat at my place for one day. She explained that it was too cold to leave the cat in the car while she ran errands, and didn't want to spend money on a hotel room for 24 hours.

Supposedly her brother's flight was delayed, and he wouldn't be home until the following day, at which time she would stay with him.

Her cat is older, and has been in the her family for years. Although I love animals, and wanted to watch the cat, I was uncomfortable doing so because of the cats age, and also, if something happened to her pet while in my care, I could be blamed.

I'm sure most people would have let the cat stay for one day, and not think it was a big deal. But I view family pets similar to children, and I'm uncomfortable watching either unless I'm close to the owners or parents, and familiar with the pet or child. Was I wrong for not watching her pet? What would you have done?

Also, it bothers me when people leave their children and pets with people they hardly know, because you don't know how that person will treat them. We're associates, but have never spent social time together, or visited each other casually.

Yes, I would be willing to do that for a day, or a couple hours. If it were for a couple of days then it wouldn't work in my household well.

You needed to do what was comfortable for you and not worry about what others would do or think of your choice. You are going to get half of the people saying no and the other half saying yes and either answer wont make you feel better. Don't worry about it

I would personally do it. But I have had many animals and a pretty good sense of knowing when they need a vet. As well as knowing if the cat was old and died it would not be my fault. But just because I can do it does not mean that it is right for you. If you did not feel comfortable then you should not do it.
I would not want anyone that was not comfortable with my animals to watch them.

No, because, like you, if something was to happen to the pet, I could get blamed for it. And you don't know how the pet is. It could bite and give you rabies, or it could be sick. I'm not paranoid, but I wouldn't watch an animal unless I knew the owner really well, and I knew the pet before they asked me to watch it.
You aren't wrong, so don't stress!
Hope it helped!

For a day sure. But I see your point. and no you where not wrong in your choice because it was your choice. I would have a hard time watching a cat because of my dogs.
