The exchange rate is 121yen = $1.00, but when you actually exchange it at the bank, they charge you 3 yen per dollar handling fee, so actually get only 118yen =$1.00. Then, if you exchange the money at the airport when you first arrive in Japan, they will take you for even more, sometimes up to a 5yen fee per dollar.
In social terms, $1.00 is like $.25. What I mean, for example, arcade games in the US cost $.25 (at least that's what they cost when I was in the US) here, they are 100yen. Regular candy bars that were 25-35cents in the US, are more than triple in Japan. So I adopted the 100yen=25cents mentality for everyday shopping.
Hope that helps.

Did you mean the exchange rate? It's an important index for oversea travelers. But it's not considered as the true worth rate because of the excess liquidity of the currencies all over the world.
I think the purchasing power parity is a good index to estimate the worth rate of two currencies.
According to the OECD estimation, the purchasing power parity of them is that 1 dollar = 135 yen.
