I'm glad that several of these folks insisted that you should take college courses, but they didnt say where. You should go online and check out schools that have degrees in Food Service Management. I know there is one near me, Johnson & Wales University. You can get an Associates degree in culinary arts so you are an experienced chef, and then you can complete your Bachelors degree in Food Service Management or Beverage Management. They will give you courses in accounting that are specifically designed for restaurant managers, also, a business law course which concentrates on laws about food and food service, and I think you can become a licensed bartender and pass a test to bec accredited for inspecting restaurants for health safety - that would be a great thing to know about if you were running a restaurant. . I think its a great program and lots of the graduates have started great restaurants in our neighborhood. Check it out on line. p.s. they ARE regionally accredited.

Not at all. All you need is money and a permit for you business. You may need other licenses too depending on the type of business. Example, if you are going to sell alcohol you will need an alcohol license. Millions of people have successful business and don't have a college degree. What a degree does is give you a good base so that you make grounded solid decisions. Well, so we hope. Also, school can help you learn how to balance the books and other administrative stuff. Also, it will give you something to fall back in case the business does not works.

Of course not. If you want your business to have the best chance at success, then you'd definately better consider college courses. You have absolutely no idea how much you don't know right now about business. You don't need a degree, but I would strongly suggest at least 2-3 accounting courses, 1-2 business courses, and 2-3 management courses. My degree wasn't in business, so I took a different number of each of those courses, but I had no idea just how much I didn't know until I finished those courses. I have a Bachelor's in management, so I took more management courses than what I suggested. Give your business every chance to succeed and BEST OF LUCK!!

Didn't I answer this for you earlier when it was a bed and breakfast instead of a restaurant?
My answer remains the same: THERE IS NO EDUCATION REQUIREMENT TO OPEN OR START YOUR OWN BUSINESS.
But if you want to have a successful business, you'll need at least some post primary education. Try buisness management and hotel/restaurant management.

You don't have to take any courses to open any business, but it can be helpful to take some business-related courses so that you understand the financial, legal, and human resources aspects of the job and don't get yourself into trouble.

There are courses for Hotel/Restaurant Management that would most definitely help out. They aren't usually that challenging either.

No. Experience in restaurants can provide plenty of training on opening and running one yourself. Just ask questions.

i grant that nearly no learning at all takes place in college however the tiny amount of knowledge gained in a few business management and economics courses would probably help a lot.
