Gwenneth and I were together for more than 40 years. She passed away and it is my greatest sorrow that I was not with her at the time.
May all of us who are or were together continue to live, love, laugh and be happy.

I am not a woman, but I actually know of five lesbian couples who have been together for over five years. The longest one of them are two women I shall call "Grace" and "Sally." They actually met one another in highschool after coming out and found they had a lot in common (wanting to be psych majors, wanting to go into social work, much more) and are currently over fifty. They are some of the most loving people I have ever met and even raised a wonderful son when one of their friends died (they were the God mothers). He recently just graduated from Harvard and is becoming a doctor.
So, not only have they been together for more than five years, they are very successful. I would say they are soulmates.

I have 2 sets of close friends who 1 has been together for 5 yrs exactly, and the other have been together since they were 17...they are now 25. You do the math. Yes it's VERY possible for lesbians to succeed at having a beautiful and committed relationship. Im working on 2yrs in April & i've NEVER been happier.
All couples, no matter what gender, go through highs & lows. If straight couples can last for yrs & yrs, same sex couples can do the exact same.

I'm not a lesbian, or a woman, but I work with a lesbian who's been with her partner for at least 15 years, and I have another friend who's been with her partner for just over 4 I think.
I also think that you're mother is off base that sexuality has anything to do with "functional relationships". Are there lebians or gays who want a long term committed relationship? Are there lesbians or gays that are "players"? Answer is yes to both questions, just like the answer would be for straight people. What's sexuality got to do with it? BTW, tell mom that according to current statistics, 99.9% of divorces in this country are between straight couples. Peace.

My partner and I have been together for ten years+. We plan on spending the rest of our lives together. So far, we've beat out a lot of our "straight" friends in how long our relationship has lasted.
But Del Martin and Pay Lyon are probably the most well known long-lasting lesbian couple. They began the group knowns as "Daughters of Bilias" and were the FIRST same-sex couple that were allowed to marry in San Franscico before the Govenator overturned Mayor Newsomes allowance and nullified all those marriages. But they're still together after MORE than 50yrs!
Mary Cheney and her partner Heather have been together for over 12yrs and they're expecting their first baby, born from Mary, in a few months!!

I just met two small town school teachers in their late sixties who have been together for almost 50 years. My sister-in-law has also been in a committed relationship for well over 15 years and a good friend of mine (man though) has been with the same man for 6 years, and I never thought that fella would settle down! I think your mother is buying into a stereo type. Tell her to check the track record of us straight people! I am 30ish and been married for 10 years and I can tell ya' straight marriages in my age group are dropping like flies!!

I'm sorry but your mother is so wrong. I am personally friendly with at least 4 lesbian couples who have been together for over 15 years. Your mother probably has a Ratclyffe Hall view of lesbians (The Well of Loneliness). Ms Hall was herself lesbian and probably pathologically depressive. One historically famous lesbian couple were the "Ladies of Llangollen". Try googling them.
Chin up and don't let yourself be put off by narrow-minded propaganda.

A male here - retired - a lesbian couple across the street (excellent neighbours, btw) have been together before I moved here 29 years ago. Thats better than most hetero couples these days!
And a confrere - a high school guidance teacher - has been with her female lover since I first met her... about 12 years now...

I knew of a couple,,, they have passed,, both widowed early 30 40's. They lived in San Francisco and started by sharing the apartment. IN ALL respect their companionship seem platonic and simple roommates, except (a proper) intimate friendship of arm in arm or holding hands in any public way.
They were together about 15 years that was about 12 years ago.
Lesbian, I can not say... but my aunt talked about her all the time and the thing or places they went. I'm sure they slept together at some time. just makes sense.
I am also sure that their money was a major issue both having only social security.
