You can try one of free Anti virus softwares like AVG or Avira !

here you can download them:

http://free.grisoft.com

http://www.avira.com

But it sounds like your computer is infected with Spywares, in this case you need to install Anti Spyware program, you can download it from AVG site. Install both Anti Virus and Anti Spyware, because both of them are necessary for safety of your computer !
In case that you want to use commercial version of Anti virus and anti spyware, I recommend you to use Kaspersky Anti Virus (Antispyware is included) or Bitdefender (Antispyware is included), I use Kaspersky ! it works great ...
http://www.kaspersky.com
http://www.bitdefender.com
You may download the trial version and use it freely for 30 days !

The Anti Virus software that your ISP is using does not guaranty anything in your PC ! remember that ;)

I know another solution, that sometimes helps ! If you know the exact date that your computer has infected, you can restore your computer to day before that date, by using Windows XP Restore program ! most of the time it is the easiest and simplest way to solve these kind of problems ;) but don't forget that you will lose the programs and settings that you have installed after that specific date. I case that it didn't work you can undo the restoration again ;)

After all, I suggest you to use Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer ... It's more secure !

If you have a virus, a good program to use is mcafee virus scan, or AVG virus scan. You can download them and many other virus scanners at "www.download.com" Since download.com is part of "Cnet," don't worry about getting a virus from them. There you can also see which other virus scanners there are if you click on their anti-viruses column.

Your problem is probally because a virus deleted a system file which is incharged of displaying GIF images or HTML files, so after running the virus scan, if it still doesn't work, getting a registry fixer program like "Registry Mechanic" should fix that problem.

Your problem could also be related to spyware. A very good spyware scanner that I use is "Spyware Doctor," although there are many other good ones. You can also get that too from Download.com.

Hope it answered your question.

www.freewarefiles.com

Download Avast Antivirus and run the thorough scan.
Download Ad-Aware Personal Edition and run the thorough scan.

Both are free. If this does not work, and you are using xp, do a system restore to a time before the virus hit.

the best program out and better than any mentioned below is called Prevx1. this is only good if you have DSL or better. you must have a constant direct connection. reason is that the viral data base is not stored on your computer but on Prevx1's. it is updated dayly, anything running in your system is compared to the data base. this is the only program i have ever found to remove many trojan and viruses that others won't detect. this is a trial version that you'll download and does fix problems for so long. none of the others compare to what it does.. here's the link...

heres my two cents...
First and foremost, set a password for your PC.
Next, Run your computer in Safe Mode
Then, Use McCaffe (or any anti virus program) and run a virus scan
Last, but not least upgrade your firewall to high security or even lockdown...
in no time (maybe a week at most) a good antivirus program should be able to detect/clean the virus

(U should also unplug your internet modem when not in use)

Oh dear! You've found out the hard way just how insecure Microsoft Windows is!
Before connecting a Microsoft Windows system to the internet, you must first take
as many precaustions as you can.

For now, you can use SUPERAntiSpyware

http://www.superantispyware.com/

FREE edition to clean up your infestation.

But remember that even though you've cleaned this one out, Microsoft Windows is still vulnerable!

* Make sure you always run up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware programs.
* Always install all Microsoft security updates as soon as they come out.
* Ensure you have a properly configured firewall.
* Never use Internet Explorer (use Firefox instead) or MSN Messenger (Use GAIM or Traillian).
* Never download anything you don't understand.
* Never click on any ad banners.

You may need to switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Then beef up your security. Its easier to prevent malware getting on to your sytem in the first place rather than trying to remove it. All the following programs are free for home use;

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.
http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall OR
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.

You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
http://www.ccleaner.com Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.

http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm - The Spyware Warrior site identifies fake anti spyware programs.
https://www.grc.com - Shields Up security site, check your firewall works.

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.
