It's really just fear of the unknown. Your sense of sight is gone/diminished, so you become more aware of the possibilities you need to be prepared for.

We are taught to fear darkness from our own society. If you hear any ghost stories or watch horror movies you always see them coming out in darkness. Some religions also signify darkness as power of evil. I think all this came out as we can not stay as much active during night as day time due to vision limitation. So, even if we don't believe in ghosts/spirits our mind still keeps that idea somewhere in the corner which springs out during darkness. I bet people who never heard these stories/watched movies (I doubt if we can find anyone) wouldn't be afraid of darkness.

Fear is a survival mechanism, but to answer your question I need to know what degree of darkness it is you fear. Just like good and evil, darkness has many levels.
I suggest you find the level at which it starts to bother you and then stay there as long as you can. You will find that it doesn't bother you after a while, and then you can go darker still.

Throughout the course of mankind, you are not alone, man has often feared two things, darkness and the unknown. These two things are not surprising because the are both related. Often light symbolizes knowledge. Darkness conceals things and those casts a shadow of unknowing. We are often afraid that someone might hurt us or something will fall on us in the dark.

we fear darkness because we have been taught to fear it, these are concepts handed down by our forefather. basically the human mind is over dependent on the sense of sight . The inability to see and use our other senses led us to be vulnerable to other predators in the olden times. Besides the other major fear of ours is that of being alone, which is also accentuated by the darkness. I think a blind man could anwer this question better.

. Many already know what their "darkness's" are. It's the "fear" of the unknown...going into the path that lighted. Some stay in the "shaded" (darker) "safe" zone because it's familiar and not far to fall or travel. It takes courage, some work, "traveling" to move into the light. Person might be thinking the "what if's"...the "what if I don't make it"? "Man cannot discover the new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore." ~ L. Rosenauer ~ Both "darkness" and "light" have their rightful place. By understanding and experiencing both...they blend together to enlightenment. The two half's blend and create the whole (of understanding). Yin / Yang...dark and light...curve together in the middle...all is one. And...as far as the Light of the One Light (God). I'm aware that I'm a child of God. A "beam" that's reflected out from the One Light (God)....as all are. To one day transition COMPLETELY to that realm of the One Light. . . That's a stunning and natural place to be. No "fear" of being in that realm. In the meantime, I live in the Light here in this place. As human beings were are perfectly imperfect... walking this soul path journey. .

We fear situation or circumstances about which we are ignorent and have no control. We fear darkness when we can not see what it means and can not apprehend what potential danger it holds for us.All fears spring from ignorence or lack of knowledge of how to handle situation over which we have no control. To fight fear shine light of knowledge over the darkness of ignorence.Fear is magnified by our imagination in the inverse propotion of our ignorence.Always seek knowledge to fight ignorence. If you find the light you will conquer what you fear but even if you do not find light of knowledge, the search and pursuit of quest for knowledge will keep your mind and focus more on the pursuit and less on the fear. Ask not why I fear, Ask why I am ignorent and what is I am ignorent about. If you find the answers, you are halfway there to conquering your fear.

me too i am so afraid of the dark and would die in my bones. with me i start to feel as if some one else is in the room and my eyes play tricks on me making me see strange things, even though you cant see in the dark but my eyes see black and if there is like a little flash or movement out side my door i would scream and wake up everyone. so i would never sleep in the dark never try it again and strangely some people cant sleep but in the dark, complete darkness.

I'm not afraid of the dark, but at times your mind can start to play with you. I think it's because we can't see in the dark, so our imagination kicks in and we start thinking things. At times in the middle of the night when I wake up to go to the bathroom I feel like someone is watching me from somewhere in the house. My mind is playing tricks on me.
