I didn't make the team last year, what would i have to do to make the team next year for freshman basketball. Well i was stupid and for last summer i didn't work hard enough for shooting. I didn't make the team but was very close. I was the 13th or 14th man, and the coach only took 12 men. I made 9/10 layups, did better than average on the open gyms and on the dribbling. The thing that really hurt me was that i made only 2/10 spot shooting, and 4/10 free throws. I also was a little dizzy and did badly on the ladders, cuz somehow i counted wrong. Well thats over but after that big blow to me, i worked my *** off on shoothing and can guareentee you i can make the team now. Before i prolly made 10% 3 pointers (yes bad i know) and maby like 40-60% spot shooting, but now i can make 30% of my 3 pointers, and 60-80 % or my spot shooting.

I have greatly improved but with highschool freshman year coming up it will probably be as hard as the 8th grade tryout because in highschool my school is combined with one public and private school. The private school has alot of good players. Well those people from the private school have a guareented spot almost. I need to improve on my free throws, speed, my confidence, and lastly my dribbling. I am 5'8" and could've been a good forward for my school. But in highschool i will have to most likely switch to shooting guard which i like to play actually more than forward now. What can i do in the summer to get on the Highschool team. My dream is to at least make it to a jv or varsity team when i'm a senior. I know this is very far-fetched, but i have never given up and won't give up. I know what ur thinking, "how is this kid supposed to make the high school team if he didn't make a middle school team". I put my whole heart into basketball and it is my passion.

You answered alot of your own questions by stating you didn't practice enough. Practice, practice, practice. Use both hands dribbling and shooting. (Coaches love to have players whom can use both hands effectively.) On your foul shooting, find a comfortable ,succesful rythym. Be it dribbling the ball 3 times then shooting, or not dribbling at all then shooting. Foul shooting is all about muscle memory. Once you get your mechanics down and "touch" for foul shooting, try real hard to make at least 5 in a row, THEN close your eyes and shoot again. You'll be surprised how many you may make blindfolded once you establish your muscle memory. Try to join a summer league team, see if your parents will send you to a basketball camp. There are many very very good basketball training camps out there. Just by reading your question I can tell you have the desire, that's half the battle won. But now you have to show your DRIVE. See if the older boys will let you play with them, you can learn alot by watching and joining them. NEVER be afraid to ask them questions on how to improve your game, They'll be flattered and more willing to let you join. ALSO don't stress so much on your offense, a good Coach also looks for a good defensive player. One who is fast, one who is not afaid to take a charge (offensive foul), one who does not foul alot, one who can cause alot of turnovers, and one who just plain hustles all the time. Become a "Coachable" player, obey, and volunteer to do extra things like practicing overtime or helping with equipment. Never complain, never talk back, work and practice your tail off, do well in school (good grades and good behavior), I promise your Coach will notice this. Good Luck to you young man, sports are a wonderful medium to build character. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school team.

First of all, not to be mean, 9/10 layups is not good enough. those are freebees unless you're being fouled. same with freethrows, you can't miss those. Aslo, you may say that you make 60-80% of your open jumpers but its much different come game time and you have a defender in your face. not even pros come close to those percentages.
In high school the best thing to do is be a good passer or a good driver. Defence is so poor in high school, your best bet is to drive the ball in and either make the layup or dish it off to the open man after you draw the defence. Passing is aslo a big thing in high school. Coaches hate players that think they are all-stars. they would much rather have a player that makes great passes to the open man under the hoop. When you get the wide open shot, you should take it, but your best bet is to penetrate the defence, draw fouls, make your freethrows, and make great passes.
Another thing... Since defence is so poor in high school, work on your defence and if you are an exceptional defender, that will make you stand out from the others.
As far as ball handling, if you go jogging, bring a basketball with you as you jog, it helps.
To sum it up, most kids don't want to work on passing and defence. Cuz they think scoring is the most important. If you are a great passer, and a great defender, you will make the team.

ey dont trip dude...
I didnt make my eigth grade team either... everyone at the Damn school new it was bullshit (except the coach) the thing with me was I backed down to competition and I got intimidated to easily.... so my freshman year same thing happned, i made the team but I was third string.... I didnt even MAKE my JV team this year... I lost all respect, and people thought I sucked at basketball..... but the truth is I loved basketball and I thrived for excellence and i felt even stronger than ever to make the team.... so so far this year i've been working on my shot, ballhandling and other skills and I have become 300% better of a player I was... now when I play my friends who are starters I usually beat them or at least hang in there with em.... my point is dont give up and as long as you belive and you really want it you will be able to get it.... I havent tryed out for next years team yet but I guarantee you I will make it and start... see you got to believe

Penetrate and dish. That is the key to basketball. I am by far the least athletic kid on our JV team but I start almost every game just beacuse I can dribble with both of my hands and I dish the ball. Good Luck at next years try-outs

Yeh, work on your weaknesses, but defintely on those hustle drills, coming in first on suicides and the like, shows you can be a reliable player when your team needs a play to change the game.

best way is to play some pick up ball at your local playground or maybe somewhere else. playing pick up ball will give you the chance to learn how other people play and you will definately pick up some pointers. you have to practice at least 3 hours a day . remember to bend your knees and follow through when shooting your freethrows.practice practice practice

this kid on my varsity team got cut 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. And then he worked hard before fresman year and he started varsity sophmore year. HE is the best player now junior year. (He grew like a foot between 8th and 9th, though) He is 6'6'' now.

ha, that happened to me too..
I made it just by working my tail off at tryouts...
if u ever have to do a sprint or suicide, try to win the first and the last ones, those are the ones the coaches notice the most
