As Christoph says...plus the country is so overpopulated and poor, the parents and elders are all totally dependent upon their offspring to care for them in their old age. High value is of course placed on family care, relationships, interdependence and dependency.

part of the reason is the age of the culture. in a global view the european settled US is a child (450 years) compared to England (1200 years) or China (5000+ years) or India (4000+ years)
Another is that Indian society is overall much less industrial, and therefor much more family dependant
And Indian culture is much more religiously based than the US. We are lightweights on the religious scale when compared to the world.
