Forgive my very unspecific terminology. I am car-knowledge challenged.

I hope you know what I am talking about.

BTW, if it's of any use, that stick is only in cars that are not automatic. I don't know the name of that type of car either...

In either type of car, it's called the "gear shift lever." Your terminology of "stick" and "automatic" are both correct, though. A manual transmission car (a.k.a. a car with a stick-shift or stick for short) has a gear shift lever that you have to move through the gears (1 through 5 or 6 these days) while depressing the clutch pedal (you may have seen that third pedal to the left of the brake and accelerator pedals in those cars too). A car with an automatic transmission has a gear shift lever that has Park (P) at the top, then Reverse (R), then Neutral (N) and Drive (D) and possibly other letters or numbers below that. As you probably are aware, you don't have to do anything in that kind of car other than put it in Drive and go, and you only have two pedals - accelerator and brake. Hope that helps!

In a manual transmission it is called the "gear shift lever" or simply "shifter." In an automatic transmissioned vehicle, it called the "gear selector."
