The poor and the homeless are over populating and causing the trolls to relocate from the caves and from under the bridges their great-grand parents built back in the day. It's not that the troll population is dwindling it's that they are moving to more secretive location.

In fairytales, they are regarded as evil creatures. As the fairy tale genre has changed over the past two centuries from Grimm's Fairy Tales to Barbie and Ken-- trolls have been deleted from the stories. It's probably because someone high up in the "English" Society decided that trolls were no longer good for fairytales and too grim for children to read about. Then the other authors followed.

Troll population is still way too much if you ask me. River trolls are basically , too many people see bridges for the to conveniantly hide there. Forest trolls are still high, but they are rarly seen. Tunnel Trolls are in vast numbers below the surface.
