We live in a small apartment with electric heat. Our electric bill is THROUGH THE ROOF!!! We thought by being on the third floor we'd catch a lot of heat from downstairs, and we do! But we live in Vermont, and its COLD!

Is there any sort of small heating unit I can get that is safe (I don't want anything htat could cause fires) and less expensive than electric heat?

Our apartment is VERY small, so we'd only need one little heating unit.

Any ideas?

I would not burn any fuel-type heater inside your house.

If you get a bit of airflow, things might improve. Just run a small fan (pointing at the ceiling) on low and if you have a ceiling fan, kick that on low as well. Portable heaters are 120 volt and half as efficient as 220 volt baseboard heaters... the use of one unless just an hour or so for one room per day as a helper... higher bills again. The key is to move the hot air from the ceiling; down to where you guys are.

Most space heaters use up the same ammount of electricity as four refridgerators... not that I really know how much that is, but my point being that electric heaters will still be expensive.

I'd suggest winterizing your apartment. Put window plastic up on the windows, make sure your door jams are keeping the heat in and just dress warmly (which I'm sure you probably do already).

Also, turn the heat down or off completely during the day if possible.

You're right, any electric heater uses a lot of energy.
If you can tolerate a slight odor, kerosene heaters are safe, make a lot of heat, and kero is cheaper this year than it's been for a while.
