Well, I will tell you about my own experience with smoking. When I was 14 years old my friend and I were drinking wine coolers and cruising around town with some friends. My friend started smoking and asked if I wanted one. I said no at first, but then she said she only smoked to get a buzz when she drank. I had just started drinking alcohol and I figured I would try smoking to get a buzz also. Well, after that point I started smoking when I would drink. I did this all through High School, and after High School I started smoking when I wasn't drinking alcohol. I smoked a couple of cigarettes at a time every other day. It started innocently enough , but ended up being habit.
I went to college and smoked even more. I tried the patch to stop but it made me feel funny so I stopped. Eventually I stopped smoking by gradually weening myself. I did good for a couple of years but started again when I got a job at a cigar store. I smoked cigarettes more in one day than I ever had before (5 to 7cigarettes a day). I did this for almost a year and noticed I started cough more and more.
One day I was heading out the door in the morning and I started coughing so hard I couldn't stop. I got scared, and when I finally stopped coughing I made a promise to myself, I would stop smoking. I realized I couldn't continue working at the cigar store and not smoke, so a couple of months later I quit. I smoked during the next 6 months but I gradually weened myself off and I am now 1 month smoke free.
I think that one way we can get kids to stay away from cigarettes is to teach them self respect. Allow them to take responsability for educating themselves before they make a decision, also in any decision they make in life. Tell them to research smoking on their own as a project or extra credit, and when they educate themselves, instead of being told what to do, they will be more receptive to the idea of not smoking. That way they make their own decision to smoke or not to smoke, that is the answer.

I'm with Ralph...Wikipedia is very detailed. You couldn't site any of the information you got from here anyway."oh, yeah, I went on the internet and got this from some random guy on Yahoo." You would get an OUTSTANDING grade.^_^

Smoking is highly addictive because of its heavy nicotine content. Essentially people hate them because of the cigarette companies who lobby for them in Congress and for the fact that it kills so many people, yearly.

Try wikipedia for more info.
