I am having a hard time with this-could someone at least get me started?
A particle of mass m is traveling at an initial speed v0 = 27.0 m/s. It is brought to rest in a distance of 51.0 m when a net force of 16.0 N acts on it. What is m?

F = ma
We know F (51N), we need to find m so
let's find a, the acceleration

We know that the speed function is
v= at + v0
0 = at + 27
t = 27/a

And the distance function is
d = 1/2 at^2 + vt
51 = 1/2 a t^2 + 27t
replace with t = 27/a

51 = 1/2 a 27^2/a^2 + 27*27/a
51 = 364.5/a + 729/a
a = (364.5 + 729)/51 = 21.4 m/s^2

So m = 51N/21.4m/s^2 = 2.38 kg

Use the equation

final velocity squared minus initial velocity squared equals twice the acceleration times the distance covered.

You have force instead of acceleration, so use F=ma.

a = (∆V)²/2x = 27²/(2*51) = 7.147 m/s²

m = F/a = 16N / 7.147m/s² = 2.2387 kg
