Well i was stupid and for last summer i didn't work hard enough for shooting. I didn't make the team but was very close. I was the 13th or 14th man, and the coach only took 12 men. I made 9/10 layups, did better than average on the open gyms and on the dribbling. The thing that really hurt me was that i made only 2/10 spot shooting, and 4/10 free throws. I also was a little dizzy and did badly on the ladders, cuz somehow i counted wrong. Well thats over but after that big blow to me, i worked my *** off on shoothing and can guareentee you i can make the team now. Before i prolly made 10% 3 pointers (yes bad i know) and maby like 40-60% spot shooting, but now i can make 30% of my 3 pointers, and 60-80 % or my spot shooting. I have greatly improved but with highschool freshman year coming up it will probably be as hard as the 8th grade tryout because in highschool my school is combined with one public and private school. The private school has alot of good players. More details

Continued... Well those people from the private school have a guareented spot almost. I need to improve on my free throws, speed, my confidence, and lastly my dribbling. I am 5'8" and could've been a good forward for my school. But in highschool i will have to most likely switch to shooting guard which i like to play actually more than forward now. What can i do in the summer to get on the Highschool team. My dream is to at least make it to a jv or varsity team when i'm a senior. I know this is very far-fetched, but i have never given up and won't give up. I know what ur thinking, "how is this kid supposed to make the high school team if he didn't make a middle school team". I put my whole heart into basketball and it is my passion. I will get that spot with just alittle bit of help. So will you people help me? What can i do to get better in the summer and now? Thanks for everything bye

You have an unbelievable attitude for basketball. If you want to make the team you have to practice alot. By the way, practice isn't just going outside and just shooting around. I used to do ball-handling drills in my driveway and I also would work on my shooting on certain spots on the court. Repetitions are the best answer to improve your shot. Shot as much as you and concentrate on your form. Shooting form is very important, you need to be able to have a jump shot that you can get off quickly and also have the ability to shoot over taller players. Also, confidence is very important, the best shooters can never remember the last shot they took. A drill I use to do to improve my shooting was I would line up along the baseline to where I couldn't use the backboard. I would then shoot the ball, by just using my shooting hand and leaving my other hand off the ball. Also, when I shoot I like to stare at the back of them rim, sometimes watching the ball after you release can become a bad habit and you lose some touch. Well good luck, and most of all just believe that you can make the team, middle school doesn't mean anything, high school bball is what really counts.

I've played basketball for most my life. I did make my high school's varsity team, and after that I became a high school basketball referee. If I may I would like to share some tips with you. You have the first step down. You work hard and practice. That's great. But now you have to show your coach that you are willing to do anything to help the team win like playing great defense, diving for loose balls, cheering on your teammates, etc. Show your coach what the game of basketball means to you. It's not about making the most jump shots (although that helps) it's about providing an infectous attitude and playing hard every chance you get. I hope that helps. Good Luck.

Coming from a varsity coach I know how frustrating it is to work hard at something and not acheive that goal. If you work your *** off all summer running, lifting, doing lunges, shooting 500 jumpshots everyday, dribbling with both hands, and working on your mental aspects of the game, i promise you that you will that team.

Work on dribbling because making a shot isn't going to mean anything if you can't get to the basket.
