I went to the basement to get some wood stain from the storage room, and there was a big black cat laying in the middle of the floor. I stomped my foot right next to its head, but it didn't move of flinch...it is dead & its carcas is in my basement. It must have came in through the dog door down there.

Today was trash day, so no pick-up till next week. I live in Wisconsin, and it's like 16 degrees outside, so no burial. I honestly don't even want to touch the thing, but it's only a matter of time till the stench & maggots set in.

What do I do with a dead cat in the middle of winter?

put on some gloves and throw it into the woods if you live near some. disease outside is much better than in your house.

Plastic bag and newspapers: use gloves or a shovel to put the cat on some newspapers, cover it well, and then roll it up and put into a good plastic bag. The papers will help keep the odor in as it decays.. Since it is below freezing, put the bagged carcass outside, maybe in a shed or under something heavy like a barrel or large bucket so dogs won't get to it. Then toss in the trash.

If you live in a city, you can call animal control and see if you can bring the cat to their place to dispose of--most towns and cities in the south where I live, you can easily dispose of dead animals that way.

I had dogs get ahold of some kittens before (big mess!) and I scrubbed the carpet with vinegar. Now any time I have vinegar around me that's the smell that I associate with having to clean up what used to be kittens. If there really is still some smell present in the floors, try using some of the enzymatic cleaners for pet messes on the area. That should take care of the smell that was on the floor. But more than likely if it was on lineolium, the smell really is gone and it's just you associating something to it. Try lighting some good candles, febreezing all the fabric around, put a pot of water on the stove and put in some orange peels, whole cloves, and cinnamon and let it simmer for a few hours (making sure not to let it boil dry by adding water when needed). That should take care of most of the smell that your'e smelling. Good luck! If that doesn't work, give it time. It will go away.

Get a plastic garbage bag and a shovel. Use the shovel to put the carcasss in the bag.

Tie a knot in the bag, just above the carcas. Turn the bag inside out so the knot is the bottom of the bag and tie another knot.

Sprinkle some ammonia on an rag or old towel.

Place bag containing dead cat and the towel into a second bag.
Repeat the tying process.

Place outside in the back yard. The ammonia should keep critters away from it. It is cold enough to stop decomposition. Or you can put it in a freezer

Put in trash the next trash day.

Wear disposable gloves and shovel it into a heavy duty trash bag. Place the bag outside so the body freezes. In the spring, dig a hole and put in some lime and bury the cat.

The problem with going to the vet, he will charge you for the disposable. It's several hundred dollars here. Since it was a stray, save yourself the cash outlay.

I would be concerned about what other animals can enter thru the dog door. You don't want a raccoon or squirrel getting into your house. They can do lots of damage.

Usually the first thing one needs to do with a dead cat is to pry it out of the Dog's mouth - but it sounds like that is not your problem this time...I would suggest a shovel and a deep snow bank...until the spring thaw anyway.

Once I had a dead mouse in my place. I'm a female and live alone. I had one of the mail room guys come and sweep it in the dust pan and throw it away. I would have passed out if I had to do this not to mention that I would have screamed the whole time I was getting rid of the thing.

With it being 16 degrees at least you will not really have to worry about maggots nor would you have to worry about a stench once outside because it is below freezing.

Maybe you should have one of the mail room guys at your job come over and pick it up and throw it away.

Call animal control. We use to have a cat problem in our neighborhood. It was almost an every day occurrence to find a dead cat in the back yards and porches even. Animal control would come out and take them away.

Put on plastic gloves or just plastic bags over your hands, place him inside another large plastic bag and maybe a box after that. Get animal control on the phone, if you can't reach them, leave a detailed message, letting them know exactly where you'll be placing the cat, they will pick him up.

If you can stand it put the cat in a bon fire.

If you are to scared of that then call a exterminater. It with cost you 10bucks or so but if you dont want to touch it then this is the way to go

I would like to know how kitty got in. Though admittedly they can be sneaky.

Call a local vet: They probably have someone they work with to cremate euthanized animals.
