Yes, they both can be used at the same time. To the modem, you are using just one connection. The router takes all the connections, from all the computers in your house and combines them into that one connection.

You can get a router that you don't have to go wireless on the desktop computer (as was mentioned by one responder). Just your laptop needs to be wireless if you want it (even that can be wired in if you want but most are wireless now).
At my place we have two desktops wired into the router and up to 4 laptops running on it and then occassionally PPC's running off the router as well - all at the same time.
Unless someone is doing some heavy downloading you do not notice any noticable lag time in connections if you have cable or higher internet connection. If you are on dial-up then yes - with 2 or more you will probably notice some slowness with internet pages depending on what you are doing (gaming and such). So a lot does depend on the internet connection you have and what you are doing online.

Yes you will be able to simultaniously surf. It doesn't matter if you use a wired or wireless router. The difference is cost. Wireless will be more expensive. Depending on your setup, you could run an ethernet cable from the desktop (saving you from the cost of putting a wireless adapter on it) to the wireless router & purchasing a laptop with an internal wireless card. Or you could just buy a regular router & connect both pc's via an ethernet cable from both (cheapest way).

yes, both can access the internet at the same time. In wireless router, there will be a connecting port for Desktop connection. SO you shouldn't have problem.

Yes, you will need a router to share the internet connection. You might want to consider just buying another desktop, since you can get more for your $$.

Depends on if you are after wireless connection if so then you need an usb Network adapter, settings 802.11g you can plug this into any pc with an usb port and connect to wireless networks. Can be bought from PC World, e bay or most on-line computer stores at around £20.00. If you are looking to have a wired connection then you need a modem with preferably Ethernet connection, you just plug it into the back and follow the on screen instructions or the instructions that come with the modem. Hope this helps
