Mass does not change. Mass is a measure of comparison - it's done with a balance. It's not the same as weight.
Weight is the measure of how much force is exerted on a particular body, and depends on gravity.
While mass would stay the same, the thing would weigh less. On mount everest, the weight difference is about 0.28 percent.

Very slightly less in *weight*, because it is further removed from the center of mass of the earth, and the force due to gravity on an object is inversely proportion to the square of the separation of the masses. Mass is invariant, and stays the same even in zero gravity.

mass does not change where ever you are in the universe. the 10 pound steel will weigh less because it is farther from the gravity of the earth.

It will weigh less the farther you get from the two center of masses the gravity weakens.
However, mass doesn't change.
Weight is the measure of gravitional pull on an object.
Mass is how much stuff is there.

Weight is a measure of its attraction to a source of gravity. The farther from the source, the less the attraction.

If you had two magenets 10 feet apart, they probably won't move to stick together.
If you've got two magnets 1 inch apart, they'll probably move together. (making general assumptions about size and strength of the magnets here)
