They're not in purgatory, becuase purgatory is a biblical term (persay), and the Lost creaters said the explaination will be strictly science.
I think that the island is one big magnet out in the middle of no where, and the plane went over it at about the same time Desmond didn't hit the numbers. This also explains why Mr. Eko's brother's plane went down.
Why would the island be a magnet? Desmond's girlfriend's dad, who didn't like Desmond, knew he was going on a boat race. Somehow, Desmond's gf's dad got ahold of Desmond's route and planted the magnet on the island. The Others were hired by Desmond's gf's dad to watch and wait for Desmond's arrival and demise. After Desmond arrived, the button scheme was to make Desmond stay.
I think that covers my theory, but I probably forgot some things. Msg me if you want to talk about it.

I'm not sure what the whole theory behind it is, but I was glad to hear that they actually have a set point in time when they want to end the whole show...
The producers said it's about 100 episodes. That means I think sometime in the fifth season, so we're either halfway there or just about halfway there. You can find an article on the interviews on...

I used to think that the island was there to test them, and for them to overcome their weaknesses, and if they didnt, they would die. But that theory ended when Shannon died, cause i cant remember her doing anything wrong. And now im just confused cause of the whole 'others' thing. I cant wait for the next series to start!

I love the show but can't help but feel there is no theory. I think they're making it up as they go along.

When you are lost, you don't "know" God.
It's complicated. You may believe in him, but you are lost you haven't accepted or let him into your heart. In order to be saved, you simply pray the sinners prayer and accept Jesus as your savior and all that jazz. But you can only be saved once. You can only repent after you've been saved.

I think its a byproduct of a disjointed Stephen King manuscript, the one that he said "Oh the HECK with this!", threw the loose pages up in the air, and when they fell all out of order, someone started filming.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

that there is only so much you can do on an island so writers have to come up w/ random sh*t. That being said still one of my favorite shows.
