Is this a sign of a cracked foundation? I have noticed some cracks in the walls of my apt (nothing real huge) I also see cracks coming off of the area where the windows are framed. They are in the hallway of the apt too, and I am assuming the other apts have similar cracking. I dont own the building and will be moving soon, I am just curious about it. I also noticed a lot of seams in the walls. It appears the landlord used some kind of tape to cover something up and then just painted over it. Any info will be helpful. Thanks.

Its a common thing. with the settling of the building, as it ages. All walls (most) are taped and mudded. Its a procedure done with drywalling. The seams are taped over with a paper like tape, then 'mudded' over to fill in the seams where the sheetrock pieces come together. It is then painted over. It is all to hide the seams!

It could be the foundation is settling or just that the building is moving around. Does the door seem to not be as square as you would assume it was when it was first hung?

it sounds like ur landlord avoided a hefty work load if that is left ur wall could cave in, it seems there is no support in da walls which is really needed. not a builder or ne thing but that needs seein 2 as soon as possible i had da same problem.

Probably the foundation shifting--it's good that you're moving! ;) It likely wouldn't be a big deal for a very long time, though.
