It groups elements into periods and groups based on how they relate to each other. For example all the elements in group 1 have something in common, and on through the other groups in periods. It allows scientists to predict the reactive abilities of the elements and their behaviors such as halogens are pretty reactive especially Fluorine. It also provides atomic weights, the number of protons, electrons, the atomic configuration of the elements (s,p,d, f orbitals). It is very useful to those that need it.

It's to help keep the elements organized according to their chemical properties.

It also comes in handy when you are trying to write correct formulas and can't remember an element's charge. Or when you are trying to balance an equation. lol

It's quite useful.

The first one was formed by Dimitri Mendeleev. His table was somewhat different from the one we have today in the fact that it was set up horizontally instead of vertically. Mendeleev's table was quite accurate however. He was missing some elements that at the time were not discovered, but he had known enough in order to leave spaces where he knew they should be. He knew this because of the reoccurring similarities that the elements had with the ones they we placed beside.

If he hadn't come up with the periodic table, we probably wouldn't be able to understand many things about elements and their properties as we do today.

to have an easy access on molecular weights, electron placement, and easy to see interactions between elements. it also categorizes elements by type, such as gases up top moving to heavy metals as you move down the table.
